LOUISBURGH BOYS' N.S. MEET ULSTER 'GIANTS' AT CROKE PARK

Among the over 4,000 national schools in the Country, the 3 teacher Louisburgh Boys N.S. would be rated in the 'small' category with only 77 pupils. Yet Louisburgh Boys' N.S. has the distinction of providing the opposition for a virtual Goliath in National Schools Gaelic football 'senior' teams-the Ulster champions st Colmcille's of Omagh, Co Tyrone- in Croke Park, Dublin, to-morrow (Ascension Thursday), May 28, for the All Ireland Primary Schools Shield.

It will be the first time ever that 2 senior provincial Primary Schools champions have met in the Shield finals and although it's a meeting of two teams from opposite ends of the spectrum, a thrilling encounter is envisaged.

'St Colmcille's' have been described as the most talented Primary Schools team ever produced in Ulster and have a huge panel of players to select from. The Omagh school is one of the largest primary schools in the Country with up to 600 pupils.

'St Colmcille's' go the Croke Park with a merited 'Goliath' tag having acquired an impressive array of titles in recent years, including 6 Co Tyrone titles, 3 Ulster titles and an All Ireland Community Games title. They are firm favourites to add the All Ireland Primary Schools Shield to their trophies list.

To-morrow's game in Croke Park will be the final outing with the St Colmcille's team for many of the senior pupils who have represented their school, parish and County with distinction for several years, with players like Dara Mc Aleer, Brian Colton, Paul Mullen, Gary Mc Garvey, Gary Chesters and Sean Bresnan now household names among Gaelic Football fans throughout Co Tyrone and Ulster. They will be intent on maintaining their unbeaten record of the past year and bring home an All Ireland title from Croke Park.

Louisburgh boys's N.S. have a mammoth task on hand against such giants but will not be found wanting in their determination to become 'giant killers', a determination intensified by the fact that their season will mark the last appearance with this great team for many of the players who have served on it with distinction for the past few years.

The Louisburgh team's Croke Park debut is the high-point of a golden era of Primary Schools Gaelic Football success in the parish where, in a 4 year period, Louisburgh boys' N.S. and Killeen N.S. have, between them, won a very impressive total of seven West Mayo titles, 3 Co Mayo titles and one Connacht title. They have also qualified for forthcoming finals.

Louisburgh boys N.S. have won three West Mayo titles, two County titles and a Connacht title during the past 4 years. In their Connacht title campaign they defeated the champions of Galway, Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon with some scintillating displays. Neutral observers regard them as one of the best Primary School teams ever in Connacht and they have undertaken a dedicated training programme in preparation for to-morrow's, historic game in Croke Park.

The game has all the ingredients for a thrilling encounter between two great teams who have been undefeated in their respective counties and provinces this season.

Both teams have players determined to end their Primary Schools football careers in glory, St Colmcille's travel to Croke Park as raging hot favourites and are very confident of victory.

The news from the Louisburgh camp is that all players are fit and rearing to go. Fortunately, there are no injury worries. Paul Healy, who missed the Connacht title campaign through injury, is back to full fitness. The team members and managers don't mind their 'underdogs' rating for the big game and would not by any means regard themselves as inferior opposition for St Colmcille's. They are determined to prove themselves very worthy opponents indeed ..... with the very definite potential of being 'giantkillers' tomorrow, having already earned a high reputation in disposing of Connacht's best teams.

The Louisburgh team panel, managers and supporters will travel to Dublin for the game on the early morning train and return on the evening train. Fares are approx. £7-Child, £13-Adults. A very large contingent of supporters is expected to make the journey to Croke Park and will undoubtedly be joined by many of the people from the area who are working and resident in Dublin.

Louisburgh will wear their traditional black and amber jerseys when they parade into Croke Park to meet the white and red of 'St Colmcille's'. The Croke Park appearance is an auspicious and historic occasion for the Louisburgh team who are quietly confident that they will end a glorious era with a victory parade through the streets of Louisburgh to-morrow night.

Team manager, Eamon Keane, has no doubt but that , win or lose, the team will parade proudly in their home town on their return from Croke Park. "To meet and defeat giants like St Colmcille's is undoubtedly a huge task but the Louisburgh lads will not be found wanting in any aspect. If they play to their full potential, they can take the All Ireland title", he said.

Team:Michael Joe Moran, Paul Healy, Dermot Morahan, Ian Kenny, David Kenny, Darragh O Grady, Aonghus O Loughlin, Michael Maxwell, John Hegarty, Jarlath O Malley, John Mc Evilly, Barry Boner, Martin O Grady, Beanan O Loughlin, Sean O Grady, Matthew Maxwell, Sean Burke, Marcus O Malley.

Holy Family national school, Newport, having been defeated on 3 occasions in finals by St Patrick's N.S., finally laid their Castlebar bogey when they emerged victorious from their clash in the West Final at Parke over the weekend.

In a very exciting game, Newport earned their win and were made fight all the way by a tenacious Castlebar team which continued to battle for victory right up to the final whistle.

Played in ideal conditions, the Castlebar team started in confident fashion and soon had two points registered. The Newport boys were not about to yield however and fought back for Kenneth O Malley to score a crucial goal.

This was followed by a point by Sean O'Malley to leave the eventual winners leading 1-1 to 0-2 at the interval.

Newport started the second half well and had the Castlebar goal under siege. However they met with stern resistance from the Castlebar defence in which goalkeeper Jonathan Rice and full back Peter Durcan were in excellent form.

There was a tremendous battle for midfield supremacy where 4 talented players-Thomas Conway and Ronan Loftus for Newport, and James Bateman and John Regan for Castlebar-were pitted against one another and emerged from the fray with honours even.

In the Newport defence the goalkepper Edmund Moran played a hero's role and got good support from Johnny Killeen, Stephen O'Donnell, Matthew Monaghan and Derek Leneghan, while up front Sean O'Malley, Kenneth O'Malley, Alan Moran and Michael Kilroy were most prominent.

BIG WIN FOR CARN N.S.

Carn N.S. Moygownagh, had a convincing win over Banagher N.S. on Tuesday last, in the Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic Football championship, at Lacken.

A feature of the game was the outstanding display by Claire Finnerty in defence for Carn. From the moment, Joseph Finnerty had the ball in the Banagher net the writing was on the wall for the homeside even though they did finish the first half with 4 points.

Shortly after the resumption Finnerty struck again for another goal and almost immediately Gerard Healy-the man of the match burst through for a third goal. Whatever hopes Banagher had of getting back into contention were dashed when James Finnerty brought off a great save from a penalty.

Before the end John Orme, Gerard Healy, Joseph Finnerty and Joseph Cremin had other Carn points. Carn now meet Garracloon with great hopes of repeating last years win in the Ballina area final.
