Victory For Knockrooskey N.S. Knockrooskey N.S.recorded a great victory when they defeated Killeen N.S., the holders, in the Cumann na mBunscol West Mayo Division 3 Football final at St Brendan's Park, Kilmeena, on Friday night last by a 3-8 to 1-7 scoreline. An inspired tactical switch which saw Sean Moran move from the forward line to midfield payed dividends for Knockrooskey, who were ahead at the break by 1-7 to 0-3 despite playing with the sun in their eyes. Sean Moran was the star of the Knockrooskey show. He scored a total of 1-6, mostly from play, but in truth, the entire team performed excellently and credit is also due to Alan Tracey in goal, Captain P.J. Foy, Stephen Mc Grath, James Hawkshaw, David Malone, David Muldoon, Eamon Walsh, Alan Hawkshaw and subs.-G Kennedy, J Foy and N Collins. Cumann na mBunscol Erris Finals The weather may have been atrocious within the last few weeks but the sun shone on Carne last Wednesday for the finals of the National School competitions. 3 Finals in all were decided and each of the 3 served up some spectacular play. In Division 4 of the boys competition(2-teacher schools), Drumgallady faced up to Glenamoy, who were reigning champions for the Seamus Cafferky trophy. The Drumgallady boys battled strongly but by half time they trailed Glenamoy N.S. by 4 points. But in the second half the Drumgallady boys changed up a gear, led by Michael John Mc Manamon and Fergus Sweeney and ran out winners with the score 4-9 to 3-2. Needless to say the Ballycroy lads were overjoyed and much of the praise must go to the school Principal, Pat Gallagher-yes, that man again. Seamus Sweney. Drumgallach Team: Peter Masterson, Phelim Doran, Thomas Connor, Fergus Sweeney, Michael J Mc Manamon, Vincent Grealis, Padraig Keane, Michael Connor and Steven Grealis. Then next came the first ever girls final, when Geesala N.S. faced up to the girls from Aughleam. Geesala had won out the County title at U12, earlier in the week, and started firm favourites. But the Aughleam team proved scoreless for most of the half. However, the Geesala girls got their machien moving and fired in 3 quick goals late in the first half. Those scores proved to be the platform that the County Champs needed and in the second half they piled on the scores to finally win by 7-4 to Aughleam's 2-0. It would be unfair to single out any of the Geesala team for special praise, as everyone of the team played their part. Maura Talbot presented Natasha Gaughan with the Erris Shield. Geesala team: Natasha Gaughan, Patrick Scanlon, Breda Donohoe, Rachel Barrett, Mary Reilly, Breege Coyle, Beatrice Barrett. Subs: Edel Lindsay, Breda Kennedy, Phylis Moran, Sinead O Malley, Mary Monaghan, Paula Bilbow, Barbara Monaghan, Joanne Carey, Kathleen Doocey, Paula Coyle, Mary Barrett and Siobhan Barrett. While we had the final of the Boys Division 3 competition between Corclough N.S. and Binghamstown. This, as was forecast, was an epic contest between neighbouring schools and proved to be a true derby match. Both teams were in top shape and the first half finished level. Kieran Lavelle and John N Flannery were proving to be Binghamstown's leader, while Corclough had a super goalie in Padraig Carey, and a marvellous fielder in Raymond Howard. In the second half both teams had chances of going ahead, but just couldn't get the vital scores until Gerry Lavelle of Corclough, hit two first class goals to give the Corclough boys a bit of cushion. The match was still there to be won and Binghamstown tried right up to the end with Tony Gaughan, Kieran Lavelle, Kieran Lally and J Flannery giving everything. But Corclough held on to win by 3-6 to 1-8. The winners, had fine players all over the field, and really looked a polished team. Both Coaches, Gerard Henry and Mary Carey, deserve great praise for the fine game they had. John Kavnagh presented the B.O.I. Shield to Corclough captain. Cumann na mBunscol Iorrais would again like to thank all 3 matches and Delia Mc Andrew of Slater Photography. The crowds at Carne was beyond all expectations and certainly Cumann na mBunscol competitions are here to stay. All area winners are wished the best of luck in representing Erris in the County finals.
Facefield Win Thriller! Facefield N.S. defeated Meelickmore N.S. in a cracking Division 4 Claremorris Area Primary Schools final in Garrymore. Facefield led by 13 points at one stage but a suberp Meelickmore rally brought them within an ace of achieving what would have been a sensational victory. The game was played in a tremendously sporting manner and South Mayo Board Secretary, Ger Mc Hugh, complimented both teams for their wonderful sporting nature throughout the campaign. He presented the trophy to Facefield and medals to both teams in recognition of their great efforts. GEESALA GIRLS N.S. TEAM History was made by the girls of Geesala N.S., when they went to Parke, on Monday last, and won the County Final of the INTO Mini-7's competition. This was a huge achievement for a school entering a girls team for the very first time. In the semi-Final they had an easy win over Killasser/Carramore, but so also had The Neale N.S. in their semi-final. The Neale were firm favourites for the final and quickly had a lead of 0-3 to no score. Then Rachel Barrett and Breege Coyle struck two stunning goals and all of a sudden The Neale girls found they had a match on hand. In the second half Geesala added a point while The Neale took their score to 0-6. The final moments were nail-biting, but the Geesala girls held out for an historic win. There were great celebrations in the village on the return of the team. Lahardane, are also new to this stage of the competition by defeating Attymass by the narrowest of margins. They play the Ballinrobe area winners in Cong on Monday night. The Castlebar champions, Errew N.S. put in a very impressive display against Parke in the area final by winning 2-14 to 1-3, and in the process became the first school in the area to win two titles. CARROWKENNEDY'S FATE UNRESOLVED The fate of Carrowkennedy N.S. in the Division 4 final of the West Mayo Cumann na mBunscol competition remains unresolved. On Friday evening at St Brendan's Park Kilmeena, their decider with Carrowholly N.S. ended in a draw after extra time had failed to provide a conclusive result. On Sunday last, again at Kilmeena, the two sides finished level after two periods of the extra-time. Now, what is becoming a titanic struggle of Dublin v Meath proportions is fixed again for Kilmeena on Thursday night next, throw-in 7.00pm. A large contingent of supporters from the area are expected to cheer them on.
Louisburgh Boys Go Goal Crazy Louisburgh N.S. created history on Thursday last when they became the first holders of the 'Corn Pairc an Chrocaigh'. In the final they defeated raging hot favourites St Colmcille's of Omagh, Tyrone by a whopping 15-12 to 2-14. The ulster champions went into the game as hot favourites but found the Louisburgh lads too hot to handle. They tore into their opponents straight from the throw-in and the game was as good as over after a quarter of an hour. Louisburgh team manager, Eamon Keane was high in his praise of his young charges. "They have worked very hard over the last few weeks preparing for this game. In the dressing room prior to the game I knew the lads were psyched up for the game. They couldn't wait to get out on the pitch" said Eamon. It was a great occasion for the young lads from Louisburgh. The whole experience will last with them for many years. At such a young tender age they have now played and won in Croke Park, a feat that has proved beyond some of the finest Gaelic Footballers in the Country. The referee for the match was former All Ireland referee, Paddy Devlin. It was his last match as a referee and after the game at the presentation he spoke of what his involvement in the GAA throughout his life has meant to him.
