First title win for Knockrooskey N.S. Knockrooskey N.S. 3-8 Killeen N.S. 1-7. Knockrooskey N.S.(Aughagower) won their first ever Gaelic Football title when they convincingly defeated firm favourites, Killeen N.S.( WHO WERE GOING FOR THEIR 5TH TITLE IN-A-ROW) in the Division 3 area final of the Cumann na mBunscol competition, played at St Brendan's Park, Kilmeena. Good preparation for the final by the Knockrooskey boys paid dividends and they exerted attacking pressure on Killeen from the start, with Sean Moran opening their scoring tally with a great long range point. The early good work of P J Foy(capt.) and Eamon Walsh at centre-field proved decisive as they provided a plentiful supply of the ball to the full forward line of Alan Hawkshaw, Sean Moran and Dave Muldoon who had the Killeen defence under intense pressure. Killeen, however, had no intention of relinquishing the title without a strong battle and a really keen and exciting contest developed as the Louisburgh parish representatives raised their performance level to leave them only 2 points behind 0-4 0-2 after 10 mins. As Killen began to come more and more into the game, Knockrooskey's team manager, Seosamh O Maolchroin, countered with a crucial switch, Sean Moran going to centre-field and Eamon Walsh taking up position at full forward. It proved to be the turning point in the game for Knockrooskey as Sean Moran's high fielding and brilliant catching left Killeen's midfield pair outclassed. Sean Moran cut through Killeen's defence to score a great goal an added 2 points. Alan Hawkshaw tagged on another fine point for Knockrooskey to leave them ahead by 1-7 to 0-3 at half time. The pep talk received by Killeen at the interval resulted in them entering the second half with a renewed spirit of determination. Austin O Malley led Killeen's rally with an inspiring personal display which saw him field a high ball at centre-field and do a penetrating solo run through Knockrooskey's defence to crash home a great goal and lift his side's morale. Killeen, now urged on by their supporters, looked as if they might come storming back. Knockrooskey, however, shattered the seasiders winning rally hopes with a sustained attack which produced a good goal by P J Foy, followed by a point. When Knockrooskey full-back, James Hawkshaw, cleared from his line and soloed all the way up field to snatch a picture goal, Killeen's recovery prospects was put beyond their reach. James 'brother, Alan, added another point for the winners before Killeen, game to the last, came back with 2 fine points in the closing minutes.

Employing a break-down and break-away tactic, Sean and P J combined well to hold their own in the critical midfield exchanges and their trojan work was well supported by Gerard Kennedy, James Hawkshaw, Dave Muldoon in particular to leave Knockrooskey two points ahead with 5 mins to play.
