GALWAY for a SAFE ENVIRONMENT press your back button to return PRESS RELEASEMonday, March 6th , 2000 Galway for a Safe Environment (GSE) Residents for a Responsible Waste Management Policy US Expert, Prof. Paul Connett to speak in Galway Tuesday Night, March 14th, 8.30 p.m. Corrib Great Southern, Galway Professor Paul Connett, a leading US expert on incineration and waste management, will speak at a public meeting in Galway next week. Professor Connett is a leading proponent of recycling, which he calls the "non-burn" alternative to landfill, and which has come to be known as the "zero-waste" option. The meeting, which is being organised by Galway for a Safe Environment will be held in the Corrib Great Southern, Galway, on Tuesday night, March 14th, beginning at 8.30 pm. Professor Paul Connett is a full and tenured professor of chemistry at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he has taught for 15 years. He obtained his undergraduate degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University and his Ph.D. in natural sciences from Dartmouth College in the United States. For the past 14 years, he has researched waste management issues with a special emphasis on the dangers posed by incineration and the safer and more sustainable non-burn alternatives. Prof. Connett has attended numerous international symposia on dioxin, and with his colleague Tom webster has presented six papers at these symposia which have been subsequently published in Chemosphere. He has given over 1500 public presentations on these issues in 48 states in the US and in 40 other countries. With his wife Ellen, he edits the newsletter Waste Not, which is in its twelfth year of publication. With Roger Bailey, Professor of Fine Arts at St. Lawrence University, he has produced over 40 videotapes on waste management, dioxin and other environmental issues. The Galway Local Authorities announced last October that they had selected four sites for the controversial incinerator, three in Castlegar Parish, and one at Galway Docks. Galway for a Safe Environment are asking people to write to their local representatives opposing the proposed incinerator, and to make submissions to the plan.
