GALWAY for a SAFE ENVIRONMENT press your back button to return PRESS RELEASEWednesday, May 3rd , 2000 Galway for a Safe Environment (GSE) Residents for a Responsible Waste Management Policy Wednesday, May 3rd , 2000 GSE Gives Details of Debate on Draft Waste Management Plan Sunday, May 14th - Corrib Great Southern 6.00 pm Start Galway for a Safe Environment has given more details of the major debate on the Connacht Draft Waste Management Plan, which is to be held on Sunday May 14th, in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, Galway, starting at the later time of 6.00 p.m. The debate was originally scheduled to begin at 3.00 pm, but was put back to 6.00 pm so as not to clash with the live TV coverage of Galway's appearance in the National Hurling League Final that afternoon. GSE have been able to secure the involvement of two international experts who are opposed to incineration- Dr. Vivian Howard, of the University of Liverpool, and Prof. Paul Connett, of the University of Canton, New York. Galway Corporation earlier this year defeated a motion to invite Dr. Howard to speak in the city. Prof. Connett will be on a return visit to Galway, having spoken to a large crowd in the city in March. Spokesman for GSE, Dr. Conchúr Ó Brádaigh, said that they had not yet been told by Galway Corporation or County Council, who exactly would be speaking in favour of the Draft Waste Management Plan, but that the City Manager, Mr. Joe Gavin, had said the last meeting of the Corporation that they would take part in the debate (situation as of Wednesday, May 3rd at 2.00 pm) "We have secured an independent Chairperson to chair the debate, and have proposed a format where each side would be given equal time to debate the pros and cons of the issue. We have also invited the anti-landfill groups in East Galway, and throughout Connacht to participate in the debate, as there can be no incinerator without ash super-dumps", said Dr. Ó Brádaigh Confirmation: Conchúr Ó Brádaigh, 087-2830452 Áine Suttle, 091-581047
