The plan inlcudes a proposal to build a 200,000 tonne per annum incinerator in the city. Dr. Ó Brádaigh was commenting on the questionnaire returns announced by waste consultants MC O'Sullivan on today. "Based on a return of only 230 questionnaires in Galway City, with 78% in favour, this means that only 180 replies in the city are said to be in favour of the incinerator plan. The response claimed is outnumbered by a factor of over 120 to 1 by the 22,112 signatures against the plan from Galway City that the group lodged with the County Council and Corporation at the end of May. "Not alone is there no majority in favour of siting an incinerator in the City, there isn't even a significant minority in favour", said Dr. Ó Brádaigh, "as the 180 positive responses claimed only represent 0.3% of the city's population, a number which is statistically insignificant". Galway for a Safe Environment are calling on local councillors to reject the Connacht Draft Waste management Plan at the earliest opportunity, and to adopt a non-burn alternative approach with maximum composting and recycling.
