GALWAY for a SAFE ENVIRONMENT press your back button to return PRESS RELEASETuesday, July 3rd , 2000. Galway for a Safe Environment (GSE) Residents for a Responsible Waste Management Policy Tuesday, July 3rd , 2000 Silent Demonstration of Support and Concern Monday, July 10th, 6.30-7.30 pm, College Road, Galway Campaign Against Incinerator Reaches Decisive Phase People Asked to "Give 1 Hour for the Environment" Galway for a Safe Environment will be holding a silent demonstration on College Road next Monday evening, before the special Corporation meeting on the Draft Waste Management Plan. This was announced at a press conference held by the group in the city this afternoon. "We are asking the people of Galway, especially the 22,112 people who signed the petition against the plan, to come to the demonstration to show their concern at the proposal before the City Council to build a huge waste incinerator, or thermal treatment plant, anywhere in Galway", said GSE spokesman, Dr. Conchúr Ó Brádaigh. "Galway Corporation are holding a special meeting on the Draft Waste plan on next Monday evening, at which the public submissions to the plan will be put before the councillors. We are asking people, young and old, to come along to show their support for the councillors who have publicly opposed the waste plan, and to encourage other councillors to come out against the incinerator and support the recycling alternatives. "There is no doubt that the people of Galway are opposed to this plan, and this demonstration is intended, in a dignified way, to physically show that a large number of people in the city are sufficiently concerned to give up one hour of their time next Monday night, in order to safeguard the health and environment of the people of Galway" Also speaking at the press conference, Áine Suttle, said that there was a feeling out there among the people of Galway that the battle was already over, because of the huge petition that had been submitted against the plan. "We have been meeting the members of the City Council individually over the past few weeks, and many councillors are still undecided - this is why it is so important that as many people as possible turn out for this demonstration" Áine Suttle also said that the intention on next Monday evening was to cause the minimum amount of disruption, to Councillors attending the meeting, or to traffic on College Road. GSE are asking people supporting the demonstration to form two lines, on the footpath each side of College Road, stretching in each direction on both sides of City Hall. "We are asking people to come to College Road at 6.30 p.m. and to remain until 7.30, when the Corporation meeting starts. We are also asking people attending to park their cars in town, and to walk out to City Hall, again to minimise traffic disruption" Confirmation: Conchúr Ó Brádaigh, 091-799223 / 087-2830452 Áine Suttle, 091-581047
