Galtee Gaels Juvenile History
THE EARLY YEARS
While both sides of the parish had there on individual adult teams at different times, underage football teams were always made up of players from Kilbehenny and Anglesboro under the name Galtee Rovers. Very little is recorded of underage activities in South Limerick before 1953 when an U16 championship started. Records show a South final victory in 1956 for Galtee Rovers when they beat Kilmallock 1-4 to 1-3. U14 was not introduced to South level until 1972 although there was a very strong team in 1956 under the guidance of Rev Fr Power. They claimed a number of notable victory's. The following is the lineout of that team. Jerry Heenan, Raymond Doherty, Patsy Heenan, Dan Joe Kelly, davey Russell, Jim Hanrahan, Rodger O Mahony, Donie Nagle, Mike Lenihan, Patrick English, Paddy Doherty, Jeremiah Fitzgerald, Willie Walsh, Terry O Donnell, Dinny Slattery. Subs Tommy Slatterym Tom Moloney, Patk Gallahue. This team also backboned the u 16 team of that year and as a group were prominent up to u21 level under the charge of Liam Allen.
THE SEVENTIES
On the field in the early seventies the club then under the name of Galtee Gaels had little success while off the field the the club were very prominent in Scor both adult and juvenile and or juvenile question time team of Ger O Sullivan, Geraldine Jones and Mike Ahern RIP represented the club and Limerick in the All Ireland Final in 1973. On the introduction of the U12 championship in 1978 the club captured back to back titles defeating Kilfinane on a scoreline of 3-0 to 0-0 in 1978 and Camogue rovers 3-3 to 0-0 in 1979. The trophy presented for that competition was the Patk McGrath cup in honour of local Lackendarra man who won all Ireland medals in hop step and jump in 1895. In 1979 they progressed to the county final but were defeated by Claughaun 2-7 to 1-3. Some very dedicated mentors and parents of this era included trainer Joe O Sullivan, Big Bob Breedy, Billy Fraher RIP, Tim Quane and John Hanrahan and those teams were captained by Ned Quane and Kevin Fraher.
