Galtee Gaels Juvenile History
THE EIGHTIES
In that era every club played at the same level A grade. Graded football was introduced in 1985 and heralded a successful era for the club with most of our teams taking part in B grade starting with an u14 victory over Galbally in a south final in 1985 with a team captained by Jimmy Walsh which included John Quane. At that time we had a very good u16 team who were the victim of bad grading. Players like Davey Moriarty, Joe Mullins, John Breedy, Paddy Luddy, Liam Cronin, John Mcgrath, and Mike Fraher backboned the Junior team which won the county in 1988.Up until 1986 the underage teams were looked after by the Adult club but a motion was passed to form to form a Juvenile section for the club and the following officers were elected in 1986.
Chairman Ger Condon, Vice Chairman Tom Kearney, Secretary Jim Kearney, Assistant Mary Kearney, Treasurer Tom O Carroll, Registrar Bobby Breedy, Pro Liam Allen, Committee Con Spillane, John O Donovan, Ned Moriarty, Billy Condon, Ned Doyle, John Casey, Paddy Coffey, Patrick English, Gerry O Donnell and Patsy Luddy. The juveniles started out with no finance that year but by 1989 treasurer Tom O Carroll showed a profit of £789 and the end of the year after buying a football for £28 and a set of Jerseys for£252. 1987 saw one of the most important decisions taken by the Juvenile club with the starting of an u 12 parish league. This was the brainchild of Mary Kearney who had seen this operate in St Coleman's of fermoy and since then it has been one of principal events in the club annually. The first league was sponsored by Patrick English and was won by Timmy Breedy's team. That year also saw the first fielding of a u 10 team. We were South champions u13 in 1986 but lost both south final u14 and 16. We were crowned South champions again u 15 B and u16 C in 1989 but lost the u 16 county final to St Patricks on a scoreline of 5-10 to 1-4. Captain was Brian Maguire.
THE NINETIES
In 1991 our u 15's of 89 continued there good form and won the south defeating Blackrock and captured the Co u16 B title defeating Cappamore in a replay on a scorline of 1-5 to 1-4. Darren Slattery was captain. A first ever county title for a Galtee Gaels Juvenile team. That year we were also defeated in the u15 county league final. We won a first county shield final in 1994 with Tom Noonan as captain. That year also saw our u14's lead by Patk Cleary win the south u14. From the 80's to mid 90's most teams were looked after by Ger Condon, Bobby Breedy, Patsy Slattery, and John O Donovan. We won an u14 title in 1998 with Tom O Mahony as captain, also that year we won the South u 16 shield with Johnny O Mahony as captain. The u14 team returned to winning ways in 2000 and won a county u 16 title with Sean Lane as captain.
