Gaels Juniors Fall At Final Hurdle

Galtee Gaels 0-5 Banogue 2-09

The South Junior League final played in Hospital on Tuesday evening last turned out to be an action replay of the sides earlier meeting in the league stages of the competition. Banogue managed to get to a hold on the game from the beginning but because of their hard work and tenacious play, Gaels refused to be put away until late Banogue goals finally finished them off.

The first half was a tight affair with Banogue putting the Gaels defence under a lot of pressure but they squandered a number of chance before finally opening the scoring. Niall O’Mahony got Gaels off the mark soon after with a fine long range free and Banogue followed with the next three points, two from placed balls. The remainder of the half was a frustrating one with come creative refereeing not helping the game as a spectacle. It took until just before the half time whistle for Diarmud Walsh to get Gales second leaving them 0-4 to 0-2 behind at the break.

Banogue again made the better start to the half and reeled off three points in a row to put them in a very strong position before Gaels finally managed to push forward and dominate the game for a period. Two Des Lane points closed the gap to three points and after some incessant pressure, Gaels were awarded a penalty but Niall O’Mahony’s well struck shot rebounded off the upright and back into play. The pressure continued and Frank Doyle put over another well worked point leaving two points between the sides with about seven minutes left in the game. However the effort of their fourth game in eight days finally began to tell on Gaels and as they pushed forward, left themselves open to counter attacks. Banogue were clinical when they got their chance and put away two goals and two points in the closing minutes to take the South League by a comfortable margin in the end. Even in defeat it was a magnificent team effort from Gaels who had some brilliant performances in defence from full and centre backs Johnny O’Mahony and Jack Doyle. This was the first time that Galtee Gaels had ever reached a South Final at this grade and huge credit must go to both the panel of players and the management team of  Timmy Breedy and Johnny O’Mahony.
