Glengarriff and the Beara Penninsula

Glengarriff is associated with Garnish Island, the North Atlantic Drift, and more exotic fishing. The water is very warm and temperate, and could offer some surprises to an angler who fished it consistently. From the shore, it is slightly more limited, with a lot of muddy areas.

The Beara Penninsula can be a great place for shore fishing. Ballydonegan strand, in Allihies, is a great surf beach with plenty of bass and flatfish, as well as dogfish from the pier. This is where I caught my first edible fish - a freshwater eel which I caught with my hands when I was four years old! There is plenty of good rock fishing for pollack, wrasse, dogfish, and conger. In Dursey Head, near the cable car, and Fair Head, this kind of fishing can be experienced. It is worth exploring, as there are fish everywhere and you never know what you might get.

You can buy tackle in Castletownbere. Lugworm and crab is available in a few places, especially in Ardgroom, and at Zetland pier in Glengarriff.
