Wexford Sports Acro Gymnastics Club

History

Established in a Clonard front garden in 1979, the Wexford Gymnastics Club, under the guidance of the founder and head coach Mrs. Marie Baker, has progressed dramatically considering it's humble origins.

Community games and novice floor and vault gymnastics competitions brought out initial individual successes at national level, during the days of training in the Clonard Community Centre.

The club was also encouraged by the early victories in Sports Acrobatics, the discipline which it ultimately pursued most competitively, initial due to the lack of expensive equipment required.

While gymnastic successes continued at national All-Ireland level, and stand at nine individual and two team titles, most energy is now concentrated on pair/group/tumbling events. These areas have yielded over 60 national titles and brought the Wexford club to the top of Sports Acrobatics in Ireland.

Consistently represented on the Irish squad since 1988, 40 of our acrobats have competed for Ireland at international level. Highlights of the club's history include participation at 30 international events, World and European Cups and Championships being among these. Venues as diverse as Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Russia provide special memories and venues in America, Germany, UK, Switzerland and France have proved to be very successful.

For the past two years the Wexford club has claimed the trophy for the national team display. This year we go for the triple and this will be held in the venue where it all began, Clonard. Hopefully the Wexford club can bring the trophy back to the venue where the club began.

We continue to produce top class national and international acrobats, and we are the fore of the National finals. We are preparing for the national finals, and hope to bring back several medals.
