One of the major projects underway for some time now is seti@home.

This project is based on the notion of distributed computing

whereby astronomical radio data is collected periodically at the Arecibo Radio Telescope,

divided into 360Kb chunks,

and distributed over the internet to volunteer client's computers for analysing.
