BACKGROUND

Do I think Extraterrestrial life exists?

No, I don't think extraterrestrial life exists, I KNOW it exists. I can't prove it, I don't think anyone can at the moment. The existence of God can't be proved, but plenty of people believe in him/her/it. I believe our galaxy to be teeming with life, at various levels of development, but I think nature built in a "safety" feature to keep us separated by immense distances, to prevent mutual interference, until we have attained a level of understanding and technical sophistication, that we are no longer a threat to each other. I believe the bulk of this life to exist in the outer limbs of the galaxy, which is peaceful enough and has the stability and longevity to nurture the evolution of life suited to it's respective habitats. I believe most advanced alien species to be benevolent, but I fear some may be malevolent, so I would exercise caution as to transmitting beacons into space until we're in a fit position to defend ourselves, or at least until we have made friends with the good guys out there. I believe the majority of advanced extraterrestrials to be very similar to us in appearance, to have evolved from a bi-pedal predator, although I do leave a niche open for the slightly strange. Their cultures would probably be similar to ours, but without bigotry, racism or greed. I believe there to be wonderful and spectacular things out there. I believe our future to be the pursuit of knowledge for the benefit of all. I do think human population will have to be controlled in the future, how this will fit into a democracy I really don't know. Our resources have to be treated with respect. Colonisation of planets in the future, will have to be treated delicately, as I expect suitable planets will have it's own native sentient life. I don't think we're ready yet, because a lot of the traits that the bi-pedal predator used to survive in our distant past, that we're descended from, namely cunning , deceit, treachery, aggression, racism, are all still too evident today. I remain optimistic :)
