The Geraldines

Like many other GAA clubs the Geraldines take their name from notable Irish historical characters.
The name Geraldines is a gaelicised version of the name Fitzgerald. From the mid 1400’s up until 1537 the clann held extensive lands all over Ireland. The eight Earl of Desmond was the flower of the Southern Geraldine stock. The Irish people have taken this Thomas Fitzgerald to their hearts, and enshrined him there as a ‘Martyr of Christ’. He was the first of a long and fine line of Sean Ghalls to be martyred in the cause of Irish freedom. More information can be obtained by following the links below.

St. Fursey

The juvenile section of the club derives its name from the local parish church in Haggardstown, St. Furseys. It is another tradition of the GAA to name teams after Saints.St. Fursey, or to give him his proper title Fursey of Peronne was born the son of an Irish prince and became Abbott of a monastery in Tuam Co. Galway. Later he moved to Britain and on to Europe. Follow the link below for further details.
