Gilbert has been recording and releasing music for nearly forty years
now, from his first single in 1967 called Disappear on the CBS label to his latest album A Scruff At Heart released in Japan on 25 October 2006 on the Victor label. In between there have been numerous releases on a variety of labels. A second single on CBS followed in 1968 called What Can I Do and then there was Mr. Moody's Garden on the Major Minor label in 1969. The majority of Gilbert's singles and in fact his most successful ones were released on the MAM label beginning with Nothing Rhymed in 1970. After seven top ten hits in the UK including two number ones, Gilbert moved back to the CBS label in 1980. After the release of two albums and six singles on CBS, Gilbert stopped recording and prepared himself for the legal battle he faced with his former manager Gordon Mills.
In 1987 Gilbert re-emerged with the release of Frobisher Drive in Germany. This album was released in the UK under the title In The Key of G in 1989 with a slightly different track listing. At this time Gilbert was releasing singles in the UK on the Dover label beginning with Lost A Friend.
In the early 90s Gilbert became popular in Japan due to the inclusion of Alone Again (Naturally) in the Japanese animated series Maison Ikkoku. This led to the release of the Original Collection, a 5 CD box set of Gilbert's first albums on the MAM label. Also included in the set was a bonus 3 inch CD single of Alone Again (Naturally) backed by Save It. Gilbert's entire back catalogue is now available on CD in Japan and both we the fans and in fact Gilbert himself are only to aware of the role his Japanese popularity has played in the revival of his career.
Since the early 90s Gilbert has released an album approximately every two years both in Japan and later in Europe. They included Sounds Of The Loop, By Larry / The Little Album, Every Song Has It's Play, Singer Sowing Machine, Irlish, Piano Foreplay and the latest being A Scruff At Heart.
Caricature a 73 track, 3 CD box set was released in the USA in January 2004. With tracks spanning 1967-2001, this three-disc boxed set from Rhino
Handmade is the first in-depth survey of Gilbert's lengthy career. It contains numerous singles and B-sides, tracks from 16 of his albums, and five previously unreleased tracks.
A B-Sides collection called The Other Sides Of Gilbert O'Sullivan was released in Japan in February 2004 and was followed in March by the release of The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan in the UK on the EMI label.
Gilbert played a series of concert dates in Japan in June 2004, some of which were recorded for a DVD which was released in Japan in February 2005. The DVD was accompanied by a 17 track live CD.
Gilbert's first downloadable single "Just So You Know" was released on 23 April 2007 in advance of the UK release of A Scruff At Heart in June and a second downloadable single "You Can't Con-crete" was released in September 2007.
