Moylough 79 FC   1   Glen Celtic  3

1 Damien Fannon

Glen Celtic got their league campaign off to a good start with a comfortable 3-1 win against newly promoted Moylough. In the first couple of minutes Celtic were slow to start and Moylough caused some problems for the Celtic defence. However as the half wore on Celtic came more into the game and started to create chances with Martin Hegarty and Owen McStay causing the Moylough defence problems. Celtic deservedly took the lead when a free kick awarded in the Celtic half was well struck by Damien Fannon and the ball fell to Willie Comer who had drifted into the penalty area. Willie controlled the ball well and rifled an unstoppable shot into the top of the net giving the keeper no chance. This was closely followed by a Freddie Gannon volley which justed dipped over the bar and would have been a memorable strike. Moylough to their credit took the game to Celtic and tried in vain to get an equaliser. However the Celtic defence were on top of their game and at half time Celtic led 1-0.
The second half started in the same way as the first with Celtic slightly off the pace for the first couple of minutes. Moylough looked dangerous and created a couple of half chances but again the Celtic defence were resolute. Owen McStay was creating problems for the Moylough defence and Celtic doubled their lead when Owen latched onto a great through pass and was taken down in the area with the referee immediately pointing to the spot. Up stepped Niall Cunningham to coolly slot the ball home. Celtic were dominating things now and it was Owen McStay who was to get the next chance when hitting a fierce strike which the goalkeeper did well to save. Indeed it was no surprise when Celtic increased their lead when Jason Fannon hit a shot from outside the box which the goalkeeper failed to fold and as the ball rolled out Owen McStay was on hand to slot home number 3 which was well deserved. Moylough never gave up and with ten minutes left a corner from the left was met with a well timed header giving Damien Fannon no chance in the Celtic goal.
As the final whistle was blown Celtic had secured their first three points of the season and deserved them with some good performances all round.

Moore United  1   Glen Celtic  0

Celtic’s season took a setback on Sunday when they went down narrowly away to Moore Utd. From the start Celtic looked strong and caused the Moore defence a number of problems. On the wings Freddie Gannon and Sean Molloy were putting increasing pressure on the full backs and creating opportunities for the front two. However in front of goal things were not just going Celtic’s way with the final pass going astray. Moore weren’t creating many chances and anytime that they did threaten the Celtic defence were well up to the task. With half time approaching Moore finally breached the defence with a well taken goal to put them 1 up at half time.

In the second half Celtic started slowly and gave Moore a couple of opportunities but Damien Fannon in goal made a couple of good saves to keep Celtic in the hunt. Celtic came back into the game and in the final 15 minutes were by far the better team. A number of corners were won but on each occasion the ball was cleared. Then from another corner Tomas Curtin swivelled and shot only for the Moore keeper to make a good save. Celtic never gave up but just couldn’t find the equaliser which was deserved.

Glen Celtic  2  Ballinasloe Town  4

1 Damien Fannon

Celtic’s first home game of the season saw visitors Ballinasloe Town go away with all 3 points. In an exciting game Celtic started brightly and caused the Ballinasloe defence plenty of problems. Looking sharp in midfield and creating openings it was no surprise when Celtic took the lead early on with good work down the left creating an opening for Tomas Curtin whose well struck shot was saved by the keeper but the ball fell invitingly to Martin Hegarty who made no mistake. Celtic continued to pile on the pressure and look to increase the lead. However Ballinasloe came back into it and equalised. Celtic to their credit though came back again and scored what was the goal of the match. Michael Brogan charged down an attempted clearance and ran at the Ballinasloe defence. After beating the last defender he rifled a left footed shot into the roof of the net to give the Ballinasloe keeper no chance. Celtic again appeared to be in control but yet again let their lead slip when poor defensive work allowed Ballinasloe to equalise and see the teams go in 2-2 at half time.
In the second half Celtic again started brightly but Ballinasloe’s defence was dealing with any half chances created. Then Ballinasloe went ahead for the first time with a well taken shot from inside the area. Ten minutes later Ballinasloe doubled their lead and at this stage it looked ominous for Celtic. However they didn’t give up on the day and created a number of openings with firstly Micheal Molloy having a shot saved by the keeper and then Freddie Gannon shooting just wide. The game ended 4-2 to Ballinasloe and a disappointing defeat for Celtic. This leaves Celtic with only 3 points from their first 3 games.

Real Tubber  0  Glen Celtic  3

1 Damien Fannon

Celtic travelled to Tubbercurry in the FAI Junior Cup on Sunday and came away with a well deserved win against Real Tubber. Celtic started the brighter of the two and created a number of chances but Real came back into the match and caused the Celtic defence problems with a very fast forward line. However the Celtic defence were playing well and caught Real offside numerous times. When Real did beat the offside trap they found Damien Fannon in excellent form pulling off a couple of saves. Then Real broke and Damien had to be alert to dive bravely at the feet of the inrushing Real forward bringing him down in the process. As Real appealed for a penalty Celtic continued and when the ball went upfield Freddie Gannon was fouled on the edge of the box give Celtic the chance to open the scoring which they did with a well executed free kick from Micheal Molloy. Celtic looked for the second but at half time the score remained 1-0.
In the second half again Celtic started the brighter of the two teams and had a couple of chances to double their lead. At the other end Real squandered good build up play with poor finishing in the final third. They were made to pay for this when Celtic doubled the lead. An inviting cross was taken on by Robert Molloy and from his pull back Sean Molloy drilled a shot into the net. Real to their credit tried to get back into the game with Damien Fannon again forced to make some smart saves but the game was put beyond doubt when Willie Comer got the ball on the right and cut inside before unleashing a shot which was deflected into the path of Micheal Molloy in front of goal who duly dispatched the ball past the advancing keeper. A good result and well deserved.

Glen Celtic  3   Castlerea Celtic  2

1 Damien Fannon

In what turned out to be an exciting encounter Glen Celtic came out on top against last years league and cup winners Castlerea Celtic. From start to finish this game kept everyone enthralled with some good soccer played by both clubs and workrate second to none. Glen Celtic started the brighter of the two with Micheal Molloy and Sean Molloy up front causing the Castlerea defence a lot of problems. Micheal tested the keeper with a good long range shot and seconds later was unlucky not to get on the end of a good through ball with the keeper being alert and getting there first. Castlerea came more into the game and created a number of chances but good defending kept them out. Then as so many times before the Celtic defence gifted Castlerea the lead when despite a number of attempts to clear the ball they failed to avert the danger and as the ball broke in the penalty area the centre forward was on hand to dispatch past Damien Fannon for the lead goal. This spurred Glen Celtic into life and again they looked for the equaliser but the final ball just wasn’t good enough and at half time they went in 1-0 down.
In the second half Glen Celtic were on the back foot for the first ten minutes with Castlerea playing some excellent soccer and the Glen Celtic defence had to be at their best to keep them out. However Castlerea went further ahead when the ball broke on the edge of the penalty area to the centre back who hit a great shot into the left corner to put them 2-0 up. Credit to Glen Celtic they never threw in the towel and with 20 minutes remaining they carved open the Castlerea defence only to see the keeper pull off a good save with the ball going out for a corner. From the corner Sean Molloy rose the highest and powered a downward header to the net to give Glen Celtic a glimmer of hope. Spurred on by this they attacked Castlerea at will with Micheal Molloy switching to the wing and this paid dividends when after a quick break down the right Celtic cut into the penalty area and were awarded a penalty when the Castlerea defence took down Micheal. Up stepped Niall Cunningham to dispatch the penalty to the keepers left. Next another break down the right saw Jason Fannon charge through into the penalty area and he was brought down although the referee waved play on. Then with just six minutes remaining Glen Celtic went ahead – great work in central midfield saw the ball played through the centre and Willie Comer finished spectacurarly to the net. Castlerea were reduced to ten men but valiantly tried for an equaliser. Glen Celtic though were not going to let this lead slip and as the final whistle blew they had secured three vital points and had put in a performance which was excellent.

Cloonfad Utd  1   Glen Celtic  0

1 Damien Fannon

After a great win the previous week Glen Celtic went down 1-0 to Cloonfad on Friday night. In a game which they dominated for long periods of time Celtic failed to carve out any clear chances and this was to prove costly. In the first half Celtic played some excellent soccer but the final killer ball proved elusive and any time they did create an opening it was foiled by some excellent defensive work by Cloonfad. Midway through the first half Celtic conceded the only goal of the match when a defensive mix up allow the Cloonfad centre forward to nip in and lob the advancing Damien Fannon. Celtic to their credit never gave up the cause but despite some excellent build up they never managed to get the better of the Cloonfad defence. A disappointing result but still a long way to go. This weekend they travel to Skyvalley Rovers in the FAI Junior Cup and will be hoping for a better result.

(Glen Celtic win 5-4 on pens)

1 Damien Fannon

In a thrilling game Glen Celtic advanced to the next round with a well deserved win against Skyvalley even though it had to be decided by a penalty shootout. In the first half Celtic took the game to Skyvalley and were unlucky on a number of occasions with Micheal Molloy narrowly shooting wide and then being denied by a fine save by the Skyvalley keeper. At the other end Skyvalley came back into the game and only for some good reflex saves by Damien Fannon would have taken the lead. Back came Celtic and after some great work on the left by Sean Molloy and Micheal Molloy the ball was fed back to Freddie Gannon who swung over a great shot which eluded the keeper and nestled in the net. Celtic began to dominate and Gannon again went close with a shot hitting the side netting. In the second half Skyvalley came out with all guns blazing and even though Celtic created the better opportunities it was Skyvalley who equalized with a good shot from the edge of the area. In a game which could have gone either way it ended 1-1 at full time. In the two periods of extra time Celtic created a number of chances but the ball just went wide. Skyvalley forced a number of corners in the last couple of minutes but resolute defending meant that the tie would be decided on penalties. Skyvalley missed one and with Keith Cunniffe, Micheal Molloy, Willie Comer, Luke Giblin and Niall Cunningham all converting Celtic went through to the next round.

Kilkerrin Utd   2   Glen Celtic   3

1 Damien Fannon

In a thrilling encounter between these local rivals Glen Celtic edged the win with an excellent second half performance. In the first half Celtic started the brighter of the two and were putting some good moves together. However the Kilkerrin defence were well marshalled by Brian Geraghty and were giving nothing away. Kilkerrin created a couple of opportunities but again the Celtic defence were also not going to give anything away. Midway through the first half a great through ball by Willie Comer gave Micheal Molloy the chance to run on goal but he was stopped by an offside decision. Then just when Celtic thought that they were on top Kilkerrin hit them with the opening goal. From a free kick ten yards outside the box Kilkerrin put in a good cross and the Celtic defence in their efforts to clear only managed to put the ball out to Jason Ward who rifled home from close range. This roused Celtic to better things and again some great play put Freddie Gannon through again only to see him being pulled back for offside. Half time came with Celtic 1-0 down.
The second half was to see Celtic really apply the pressure and although Kilkerrin were dangerous on the break it was to be Celtic’s day. Though it did look ominous when Michael Brogan had to be substituted after only five mins of the second half due to injury. Forced to make changes Owen McStay replaced Brogan and moved up front allowing Micheal Molloy to move to right midfield and immediately he made an impact turning the Kilkerrin defence inside out before unleashing a shot which narrowly missed the target. Celtic were then awarded a corner which found Willie Comer but his shot was well blocked. Again Celtic pushed forward and were awarded another corner and this time they equalised. Tomas Curtin’s corner found Sean Molloy who header was well blocked on the line by Paddy Gordon but the ball fell invitingly to Micheal Molloy who dispatched it to the net. Celtic now were on top and creating chances although Kilkerrin on the break did look dangerous. Paul Geraghty was introduced for Daryl Fahy and immediately made an impact when he glanced on a header to Micheal Molloy who tried to break free from his marker only to be brought down in the penalty area. Up stepped Niall Cunningham to put away the penalty to put Celtic 2-1 up. More success followed shortly when Paul Geraghty took the ball down in the penalty area before turning and shooting low into the bottom corner to put Celtic 3-1 up. Kilkerrin to their credit came back and with just two minutes remaining pulled another goal back when a good cross from Seamus Keane found Declan Murphy unmarked and he duly slotted home. Celtic though held out for a good win and a very good performance.

Glen Celtic  6   Arrow Harps  3 (AET)

1 Damien Fannon

In what turned out to be an exciting affair Glen Celtic qualified for the next round of the FAI Junior Cup with an extra time win over Arrow Harps. Celtic played well on the day and in fairness should have wrapped this game up in normal time however failure to finish off Arrow  Harps when the opportunity arose nearly cost Celtic the game. The game started well for Celtic with a number of chances being created before the pressure eventually told when Martin Hegarty rose highest to meet a Keith Cunniffe cross and head to the net. Arrow Harps came back into the game and created a couple of openings only to be denied by good defending. Then with ten minutes of the first half left Celtic conceded the equaliser when a free kick from the left evaded everyone and found the corner of the net. Half time came with the scores at 1-1. In the second half Arrow Harps started the better of the two teams and went ahead with a well taken goal although the ball should have been cleared by the Celtic defence. Celtic though were not going down lightly and fought back and duly scored the goal of the game when a great ball from Willie Comer found Sean Molloy on the right whose excellent cross was met by the head of Freddie Gannon who powered a header to the top corner. Celtic were now very much on top and Jason Fannon was unlucky on a number of occasions not to give Celtic the lead. However he didn’t need to wait long as with 15 minutes to go he coolly slotted the ball past the advancing Arrow Harps keeper to put Celtic ahead. It now looked like Celtic were going to advance in normal time however poor defending allowed Arrow Harps to steal in and equalise with just minutes remaining. And so it went to extra time. Extra time belonged to Glen Celtic and from the very start it was evident that they wanted to finish the job as soon as possible. Celtic threatened well in the first half of extra time and created a number of opportunities with Keith Cunniffe unlucky when his well struck free kick hit the crossbar. However it was to be the second half of extra time which saw Celtic finish off the opposition with substitute Paul Geraghty creating havoc. Firstly a good cross from Freddie Gannon caused confusion in the Arrow Harps penalty area and as the ball broke Paul slotted home past the advancing keeper. Two minutes later he had doubled his tally when again confusion in the Arrow Harps defence allowed him to again go one of one with the keeper with the same result. Finally with five minutes to go and with Arrow Harps pressing forward Celtic broke and as the cross came into the box Paul was on hand to complete his hat trick with a looping header.  As the final whistle blew Celtic were into the next round with a convincing win.

In a dour affair Glen Celtic failed to put away a very determined Ahascragh side. Despite dominating possession for long periods Celtic failed to carve out any clear cut chances and this could only be described as dropping two points rather than gaining one. Everyone gave their all but nothing seemed to go right with Michael Brogan having to go off in the first half with an injury. In the second half despite forcing numerous corners Ahascragh held firm.

Glen Celtic came back from 3-1 down to earn a well deserved draw. In less than ideal conditions Celtic took the lead when a great cross from Sean Molloy was headed to the net by Freddie Gannon. Celtic though conceded an equaliser almost immediately. The second half saw Heatmerchants take a two goal advantage and in poor conditions Celtic were under extreme pressure. However Celtic pulled back the deficit when Willie Comer met another Sean Molloy cross to glance a header to the net and then Tomas Curtin's inswinging corner found the top corner despite the best efforts of the defender on the line. Celtic had a couple of chances to win it but were desperately unlucky.

Glenview Stars  3   Glen Celtic  2

1 Damien Fannon

It was a case of what might have been for Glen Celtic on Sunday when they travelled to Sligo in the FAI Junior Cup to play Glenview Stars. In an exciting game Celtic were the quicker of the two teams to begin with and in fairness by half time should have built a lead which would have seen them progress to the next round. Two expertly taken goals by Jason Fannon had put Celtic 2-0 up after 30 minutes but Glenview pulled a goal back before half time to reduce the deficit. In a second half marred by some poor decisions Celtic were pegged back to 2-2 and though dominating for large periods of time could not find a winner. Glenview were reduced to ten men and this seemed to spur them on to greater things and the Celtic defence were put under pressure. Eventually this told when Glenview took the lead with only five minutes remaining. From the sideline the ball looked to have been controlled by the hand but the referee on this occasion appeared not to see this. Then Celtic were reduced to ten men to make matters worse. Realistically Celtic know that this should have been in the bag at half time with Celtic playing some great soccer in the first half however it was not to be and in a second half that was marred by some inexplicable refereeing decisions Celtic bowed out of this competition.

Celtic claimed a point at home to Skyvalley Rovers on Friday night under lights but in fairness should have come away with all three points. On a good night for soccer Celtic started the stronger of the two teams and put Skyvalley under pressure. After forcing a number of corners Celtic took the lead when an inswinging corner from Tomas Curtin was bundled home by Daryl Fahy. Celtic kept the pressure up and Jason Fannon was unlucky with a shot which just went over quickly followed by a Keith Cunniffe free kick which also was narrowly off target. With half time approaching Celtic were reeling when Skyvalley drew level. A good build up saw the ball drop kindly for the Skyvalley No 6 who rifled a shot into the top corner of the net giving Damian Fannon no chance.

In the second half Celtic again took the lead with Jason Fannon finishing off a well worked move but again Skyvalley equalised to set a tense final few minutes. However Celtic should have taken the spoils when Jason Fannon rounded the goalkeeper and shot towards goal only to see a defender make an excellent goal line clearance. Final score 2-2 and a point gained however on the night Celtic deserved more.

Glen Celtic failed to gain any points on their travels on Sunday when they went down narrowly to Heatmerchants. In poor conditions Celtic started the better of the two sides and created some early chances. However Heatmerchants were causing the Celtic defence problems and Damien Fannon had to be alert on a number of occasions to prevent them taking the lead. Celtic then played some good soccer and forced a corner. As confusion reigned in the penalty area Tomas Giblin hit a low drive which the keeper could only parry to the net. Celtic looked in control but from here until half time Heatmerchants would stamp their authority on the game. The equaliser came after 25 minutes when the Heatmerchants centre forward latched on to a through ball to slot coolly past the advancing Fannon. Then with 10 minutes left in the half a free kick cannoned off the back of a Celtic defender and as luck would have it fell to the feet of an inrushing Heatmerchants player who tucked it away. In the second half Celtic played a lot better and though Heatmerchants were dangerous on the break it was Celtic who were causing problems. Long range efforts from Jason Fannon and Luke Giblin were unlucky and with five minutes left Jason Fannon was taken down after jinking his way through the defence. It looked like a penalty but the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box which came to nothing. Disappointing result again.

1 Damien Fannon

Celtic lost at home to local rivals Kilkerrin Utd in an exciting encounter which produced some entertaining soccer but unfortunately for Celtic another loss. Celtic started brightly and put the Kilkerrin defence under pressure with Niall Gannon causing plenty of problems. Kilkerrin though were resilient in defence and started to cause some problems for Celtic with some well worked moves with Damien Fannon in the Celtic goal having to be alert. With about 25 minutes gone Kilkerrin scored the only goal of the match when the ball broke to Declan Murphy and his overhead kick floated into the far corner of the net. Celtic responded well and should have been awarded a penalty when a Kilkerrin defender appeared to handle the ball in the area. Celtic forced a number of corners but to no avail. In the second half Celtic tried everything to get back into the match with Keith Cunniffe, Niall Gannon and Jason Fannon coming close. At the other end Declan Murphy came close when hitting the upright with a good long distance drive. There was a delay due to an injury to Martin Walsh from Kilkerrin and we wish him a speedy recovery. In the end despite Celtic’s best efforts the points were lost.
