In
an exciting finale to the Glen Celtic A.F.C National School Indoor
Soccer Competition the U-10 Team from Ardeevin N.S and the Over-10 Team
from Glinsk won their respective finals in highly entertaining matches.
The Competition was setup by Glen Celtic A.F.C and was kindly sponsored
by Glenamaddy Credit Union Ltd. This involved participation from all the
National Schools in the surrounding areas. In total five schools were
represented in a competition spanning a total of eight weeks with the
culmination being the finals on Tuesday night in the Sports Complex in
Williamstown. The National Schools involved were Glenamaddy,
Williamstown, Glinsk, Ardeevin and Lisheen putting forward teams in
either Under 10 or Over 10 Leagues and sometimes in both. After seven weeks of league matches the semi final in the U-10’s saw Glenamaddy 1 playing Lisheen 1 in a decider to see who would reach the Final against Ardeevin. In a close encounter between these teams Lisheen 1 proved victorious with a Ross Connolly goal giving them a 1-0 victory. For the large crowd that gathered this was just the warm up for a pulsating final which saw both Ardeevin and Lisheen 1 take the upperhand at various stages during the match with Ross and Shay Connolly driving Lisheen forward at all times but equally Peter Thomas Keaveney and Eugene Morgan doing the same for Ardeevin. After 20 minutes of play the teams were deadlocked at 3-3 and even after a further five minutes of extra time there were no further developments. The dreaded penalty shootout was the result and Ardeevin won 4-3 to win the Final. |

The
Over 10’s saw the semi final pairing of Glinsk and Glenamaddy and even
though Glinsk were the slight underdogs the formbook was overturned when
they convincingly beat Glenamaddy with an excellent performance. Pitted
against them in the final were Williamstown 2 who were unbeaten during
the League matches and looked likely winners however Glinsk broke the
deadlock early on and controlled much of the first half until Tara Tully
scored a good goal to level up the scores. In the second half both teams
were cautious but Glinsk who always looked dangerous on the break scored
a second and despite the best efforts of the Williamstown team held on
to win 2-1. Wi |
Finally
thank you to the parents for their co-operation and assistance during
the competition especially Breda Keaveney and Paddy Conneally who took
on Managerial roles with Ardeevin N.S & Lisheen N.S. |
