Glen Celtic  1   Cam Celtic   1

1 Sheila Burke Friday evening saw the Ladies playing Cam Celtic and in a highly entertaining match both sides came away with a point. Cam were the better side in the early exchanges and took the lead in the first half. However the second half saw Glen Celtic improve their performance and they created a number of chances. Cam to their credit always looked dangerous and only resolute defending by Glen Celtic prevented them going further ahead on a number of occasions with Marian Giblin starring at right back. Then with about fifteen minutes to go Siobhan O’Grady was fouled in the penalty area and from the resultant penalty Rebecca McPhilbin coolly converted to level up the scores. In a frantic finale both teams had chances to take all three points but on the day a draw was a fair result.

Glen Celtic  5  Ballinasloe Town  0

1 Sheila Burke Glen Celtic Ladies got their first victory of the season on Friday evening over Ballinasloe Town. Celtic started the better of the two and caused the Ballinasloe defence problems although they did not manage to break down the defence until 25 minutes in when Gillian Joyce took on the defence and was brought down in the area. From the resultant penalty Rebecca McPhilbin put Celtic ahead. Celtic increased their lead when Emma Curley hit a superb volley which gave the keeper no chance. Just before half time Celtic sealed the result when Siobhan O'Grady made it three.
In the second half Celtic continued to dominate and scored the best goal of the match when Claire Raftery won the ball in midfield and fed it out to Gillian Joyce who took on the Ballinasloe full back before putting in a superb cross which was met with an unstoppable header from Raftery. Celtic wrapped up the scoring when Gillian Joyce scored a superb 25 yard effort to make it 5-0. Overall a good display from Celtic and sets them up nicely for their next league games and the home tie against Salthill Devon in the Irish Cup in June. All Celtic's players played well but Claire Raftery was Player of the Match.

Glen Celtic  5   Salthill Devon  2

1 Sheila Burke Glen Celtic Ladies started their Intermediate Cup Campaign with an excellent win over a highly fancied Salthill Devon side. In all this was a highly entertaining game and one of the best games seen in a while. Salthill dominated the early possession and scored after ten minutes. However this seemed to spur Celtic into life and within two minutes they were back on level terms when Sinead Purcell who is one of the youngest girls on the team scored a fine solo effort. Celtic continued to put pressure on the Salthill backline and went ahead when again the excellent Purcell headed a ball into the path of the inrushing Siobhan O’Grady who duly dispatched the ball past the advancing Salthill keeper. Salthill though were determined to get back into the game and within five minutes Celtic were reeling again when Salthill equalised. Suddenly this game was end to end with chances being created by both sides. With half time approaching it looked like the teams would remain deadlocked until Gillian Joyce cut in from the right and scored a great goal to put Celtic 3-2 up at half time.
The second half started with both teams going all out for the win. Salthill were exceptional going forward however they met a central defensive partnership of Claire Raftery and Emma Curley who were outstanding on the night and were ably assisted by keeper Sheila Burke. Celtic looked dangerous on the break with both Joyce and Purcell causing havoc with their speed. Indeed it was Purcell who was to be instrumental in the fourth goal when she turned the Salthill Devon full back about thirty yards out and set off for goal only to be taken down a couple of yards outside the penalty area. Up stepped Gillian Joyce who struck a magnificent free kick into the top right hand corner despite the valiant efforts of the Salthill keeper.  Despite this further setback Salthill never gave up and continued to attack. Then with ten minutes to go Celtic brought on Katie Giblin for Purcell and within two minutes Katie announced her arrival with a brilliant turn and shot from the edge of the area which went into the net. As the final whistle sounded the result stood at 5-2 which was an excellent performance from this team where everyone was instrumental in achieving a great result. In defence Celtic looked rock solid throughout and were ably assisted by the hard working midfield who controlled the game for good spells throughout. While up front Celtic had strikers who on the evening were simply unstoppable.

Glen Celtic  2   Shiven Rovers  1

1 Sheila Burke Finally the win against local rivals Shiven Rovers came to the Glen Celtic Ladies. After a number of close calls they finally overcame the opposition with a great performance. In a game where the play swung from end to end both teams gave it their all. Celtic started well and scored through Lisa Nolan. Back came Shiven to equalise and the sides went in level 1-1 at half time. In the second half this contest still was tight until Noelle Connolly picked up a ball on the right after good work from Sinead Purcell and sent over a shot which went in at the far corner to put Celtic ahead. Back came Shiven but excellent defensive work ensured that Celtic stayed in front. Susie Fannon hit a long range shot which was well saved and then Shiven cleared off the line with five minutes to go. However at the final whistle Celtic held onto a deserved victory. Good overall team performance built on the usual stability at the back. In midfield Celtic fought for every ball and up front always looked dangerous.

Ballinrobe  1   Glen Celtic  2

1 Sheila Burke On Saturday the 15th July Glen Celtic Ladies travelled to Ballinrobe in the next round of the Intermediate Cup. In hot conditions Glen Celtic started the better team and dominated in all areas. Celtic created numerous chances upfront and hit the crossbar on two occasions. In the 25th minute Celtic opened the scoring from a corner kick when the ball deflected off a Ballinrobe defender into the net. At ½ time the score remained 1-0.

In the 2nd half Ballinrobe started to apply pressure and created more chances and looked the livelier team. They levelled the score through a free kick just outside the box in the 3rd minute of injury time. Sides were level and the match went into extra time. Celtic again looked the hungrier but not a lot of chances came as both sides defended well. In the early stages of the 2nd half of extra time Celtic created chances through corner kicks but it looked like the game was going to be decided on penalties but 3 minutes before the final whistle Ballinrobe conceded a free kick which was handled inside the box and conceded a penalty. Siobhan O’Grady stepped up to take the pressure kick and was well converted. At the final whistle Glen Celtic were delighted with the win and now look forward to the quarter final next Sunday in Glenamaddy.

A special thanks to Damien Fannon who filled in for David Brady on the day and made us believe we were capable of winning.

Glen Celtic  2  Eureka United  1

Last Sunday saw the Glen Celtic Ladies face tough opposition in the Quarter-Final of the Irish Intermediate Cup when they played host to previous winners Eureka Utd from Kells. In a match that was delayed for approximately 30 minutes Celtic started the better and created a number of chances only to see the final ball being misplaced. This was not helped by the blustery conditions on the day. Eureka Utd began to settle and look lively on the counter attack with their left side proving to be an avenue for some good creative play. However Celtic were not going to bow out of this competition lightly and with Sinead Purcell and Susie Fannon playing well on the wings they continued to dominate and this eventually paid dividends when a good ball into the area was deflected past the goalie by one of the Eureka United defenders. Celtic were suddenly looking very dangerous and were unlucky on a number of occasions not to double their lead with Sinead Purcell and Noelle Connolly going close. Eureka still battled on but any chance of an equaliser were thwarted by an excellent defence. Then with about 10 minutes of the first half remaining Celtic doubled their advantage and this was a goal worth waiting for. A great pass found Claire Raftery who took a couple of touches before rifling a shot into the top corner of the net. It was a stunning strike which no goalkeeper was going to even get remotely close to and was scored by one of Celtic’s outstanding players on the day. Half time came with Celtic 2 up but facing into the strong breeze in the second half. Eureka to their credit came out with all guns blazing in the second half and started the stronger and the pressure eventually told when a great shot from the edge of the box was expertly saved by Sheila Burke only to see the ball fall to a Eureka forward who finished from close range. Now we had a game on our hands but Celtic were never going to be denied a victory here and from this point onwards everyone one of the team rallied round and supported each other to provide an excellent performance. Not only did they foil the attempts of Eureka United getting an equaliser but constantly put pressure on the Eureka defence to get the third goal which would have finished this game off. Donna Timothy and Lisa Nolan came close on a number of occasions with good efforts. Eureka did create a number of chances but these were ably dealt with by Sheila Burke and her defence. Final whistle blew and Celtic were into the last four of this event.
This was an excellent team performance throughout with Sheila Burke in goal making some good saves and constantly marshalling the defence. This is a task made much easier when you have the central pairing of Claire Raftery and Emma Curley in front of you. Neither put a foot wrong and the goal from Claire was as good as you will see anywhere. The full backs of Gillian Molloy and Marian Giblin were excellent. In midfield Marita and Nicola Fahy were exceptional in the centre and putting in some telling challenges and continuously linked well with the forward line. Susie Fannon on the left played well throughout and indeed in the last 20 minutes before getting injured made some telling runs on the right which yielded a number of corners and eased the pressure on the Celtic defence. On the right Sinead Purcell also excelled and was unlucky on a number of occasions not to get on the scoresheet. Up front Noelle Connolly held the ball up well bringing other players into attack and was unlucky on a couple of occasions. Lisa Nolan again was outstanding and was another player who in the last 20 minutes took the pressure off the defence when holding the ball up well and running at a tired Eureka defence. Celtic introduced three subs with Donna Timothy replacing Noelle Connolly and her speed and vision were a constant threat to the Eureka defence, Cliona Dillon replaced Nicola Fahy and linked up well in midfield and finally Donna Kelly came on for the injured Susie Fannon and again was impressive in the short time she had on the pitch.

An excellent result against a very strong team.

Ballinasloe Town  0   Glen Celtic  5

1 Sheila Burke

Glen Celtic kept their unbeaten run going in the league with this win over Ballinasloe last Sunday. Celtic were the quickest from the start and after five minutes good work by Sinead Purcell set up Lisa Nolan to open the scoring. Celtic were dominant and five minutes later they doubled their lead when a fine through ball by Gillian Joyce was finished smartly by Siobhan O'Grady.  Then Marian Giblin went on a great run before setting up O'Grady for her second of the match. 3-0 up at half time and Celtic were in complete control.
Fifteen minutes into the second half O'Grady got her hatrick after a mix up in the Ballinasloe defence. Sinead Purcell completed the scoring with a fine individual effort. This win leaves Celtic well in contention for league honours with only two games remaining. Two daunting away fixtures against Cam Celtic and Shiven Rovers await but this team are capable of getting results against any opposition.

Glen Celtic  1   Ballina Town  2

1 Sheila Burke

The Glen Celtic Ladies bowed out of the WFAI Intermediate Cup on Sunday at the semi-final stage to a very good Ballina team. In a tense encounter Celtic started the better with Siobhan O’Grady making some good runs and forcing Ballina to concede a number of early corners. However as the half wore on Ballina came more into the game and posed some major problems for the Celtic defence. For a ten minute spell during the half Ballina were really forcing the issue and defensively Celtic stood up to the challenge with Sheila Burke in goal and the defence marshalled superbly by Claire Raftery and Emma Curley dealing with all attacks. Time after time Ballina looked for the opening score of the match but it was to be Celtic who would go in front. A quick breakout from defence saw the ball reach Siobhan O’Grady whose slotted a great through ball behind the defence where Gillian Joyce coolly controlled the ball before unleashing a great shot into the bottom corner. Celtic continued to attack and forced another couple of corners with Claire Raftery having a header well saved by the Ballina keeper. At half time Celtic went in 1 nil up.
In the second half Ballina started the stronger of the two teams and were playing excellently. Still Celtic’s defence stood tall but eventually the pressure was too much and Ballina equalised with a well taken goal from inside the area. Celtic tried to respond and were unlucky with a couple of quick breaks where the final ball just seemed to elude the Celtic forwards. Back came Ballina attacking with speed and they scored a second when a floated free kick from the right was met with a good looping header which flew into the top corner. Celtic to their credit never gave up and kept plugging away for the equaliser however it was Ballina who came closest to scoring with Sheila Burke making a great save down to her right hand side and Marian Giblin making a great tackle to prevent them scoring a third. With the final whistle about to be blown Celtic broke out of defence and after some great work by Gillian Joyce her final shot went agonisingly just wide of the post.
It was heartbreaking for the girls to go out at this stage. This team has put in some great performances in this competition to date beating some highly fancied teams in the previous rounds. On the day Ballina came away with the spoils but this Celtic squad can not be faulted with everyone giving their all for the cause. League and Cup fixtures are now next on the agenda.

Shiven Rovers  0   Glen Celtic  1

1 Sheila Burke

Glen Celtic Ladies achieved the double over Shiven Rovers on Sunday last with a well deserved 1-0 victory. This was a tensely fought battle with Shiven having the opportunity to win the league if they defeated Celtic however Celtic set out their stall from the beginning limiting the amount of chances for Shiven and always looking dangerous going forward. In defence Celtic have looked strong throughout the season with only 3 goals conceded to date and this is a primary reason for their success. Once again yesterday the defence were rock solid giving midfield and the forwards the platform to build upon. In the end it was leading scorer Siobhan O’Grady who struck for the winning goal bringing her tally in the league to 13 and Celtic’s to 35. Shiven never gave up but it was to be Celtic’s day. The final league game for Celtic sees them play Cam Celtic which looks to be a title deciding match. This match is provisionally arranged for Monday 28th August.

Cam Celtic  1   Glen Celtic  3

1 Sheila Burke

Glen Celtic Ladies created history last Monday when they won the Roscommon League for the first time following this win over Cam . Glen Celtic who only needed a point to win the league started slowly and Cam piled on the pressure. It was to be Glen Celtic who scored first when Sinead Purcell pressurised the Cam defence and won the ball before coolly slotting home. Cam however came back and equalised 10 minutes later. Glen Celtic again came back and went ahead with a great free kick scored by top scorer Siobhan O’Grady. In the second half Cam responded but great defence by Glen Celtic ensured that the lead remained intact. Then with 10 minutes to go Glen Celtic were awarded a free kick. Up stepped Emma Curley to rifle home the free kick for her third goal of the season. This sealed the win for Glen Celtic and ensured that the league title was going to be theirs. Glen Celtic finished the season unbeaten dropping just four points throughout the campaign.

Glen Celtic  1   Shiven Rovers  0

1 Sheila Burke

At least one team at home this weekend registered a win and that was the ladies team who advanced to the next round of the cup with a nail biting win over Shiven Rovers. Shiven started the better of the two teams and created a number of chances. However good defensive work and the help of the crossbar kept Celtic in the game. At the other end Celtic were creating chances with Siobhan O’Grady and Sinead Purcell looking dangerous however the Shiven defence were also on top form and weren’t going to concede easily. In the second half the game swung from end to end with neither side creating any clear cut chances. Then Shiven had an excellent opportunity when they cut through the Celtic defence but the post came to Celtic’s rescue with the rebound being drilled into the side netting. Celtic took the lead with a good move which saw the ball fed through to Lisa Nolan. Lisa was one on one with the keeper and coolly slotted home to put Celtic ahead. In a tense last couple of minutes Celtic had a few scares with Emma Curley clearing off the line but held out to register another win over Shiven. After the match Claire Gavin presented Glen Celtic’s Susie Fannon with the cup for winning the league. A good season so far and still in the hunt for the Cup. A great achievement and well done to all the girls and the management team.

Glen Celtic  5   Dunmore Town  1

1 Sheila Burke

Glen Celtic Ladies qualified for the Ladies Cup final on Sunday with a well earned victory against local rivals Dunmore. Take nothing away from Dunmore they put up a great effort but came up against Celtic at their best. In an entertaining first half Celtic were the stronger and created a number of chances with some poor finishing keeping the teams level. However Gillian Joyce rectified the situation with a typical long range strike to put Celtic 1 up. In the second half Celtic began to go up through the gears and Noelle Connolly was to put Dunmore to the sword with a hat trick of goals which saw Celtic comfortable at 4-0 up. The last of the three being the pick of the bunch with Noelle picking up the ball on the 18 yard line and drilling a great shot into the top corner of the net. Dunmore had a couple of chances and pulled a goal back with a well taken effort from just inside the area. Celtic though continued to put pressure on the Dunmore backs and saw a number of good efforts saved by the Dunmore keeper. Then with time nearly up Rebecca McPhilbin stole in at the back to slot home number five and give Celtic a deserved win. In the cup final Celtic will meet local rivals Moylough 79FC.
