Shiven Rovers  0   Glen Celtic  0

Tom Cunningham (Captain) On Saturday evening Glen Celtic Masters started their league campaign with a difficult fixture away to Shiven Rovers. In a match devoid of goals and exciting encounter still was played out. Celtic started brightly and had a couple of chances with Liam Quinn and Gerry Hynes narrowly missing the target. Shiven though came back into it and had a number of chances but the Celtic defence were in good form with Tom Cunningham and Gerry Rabbitte making some timely interceptions. In midfield Celtic with Liam Quinn and Gerry Carmody were in control but the final pass seemed to elude them. Shiven had a chance before half time to go ahead only to see the ball put out for a corner.
The second half saw again Celtic create chances but fail to capitalise on these. The closest Celtic came to a goal was when Tommy Ward met a right wing cross only to see his header well saved and the referee give a free out for offside. Shiven to their credit gave everything and could have stole the points at the end only to see a point blank header put out for a corner. Good start to the season and some good performances.

Glen Celtic  2    Ballinasloe Town  0

Pat Browne Celtic’s Masters campaign continued on Saturday evening with a win at home to Ballinasloe Town. With a full squad available Celtic were determined to get three points however in the first half playing with the aid of a strong breeze it was Ballinasloe who looked like scoring. In the second half the contest remained even until Liam Quinn went on a run from the halfway line which saw him pass two defenders before coolly slotting the ball under the advancing keeper. Five minutes later and it was 2-0 with Liam scoring a second and finishing off any hopes Ballinasloe had to get back into the game.

Moylough 79 FC  0  Glen Celtic  1

Glen Celtic earned a well deserved victory over Moylough away. Playing with the bare team Celtic were always going to find this tough going but from the start showed a great team spirit and commitment. Defensively Celtic were solid throughout with Henry Haverty and Gerry Rabbitte in central defence outstanding. In midfield Tomas Hussey and Liam Quinn played well ensuring that the Moylough team had to fight for every ounce of possession. Up front Eamon Phelan returned to the fold and caused the Moylough defence plenty of problems ably assisted by Michael Mee. At half time the score was 0-0 with Eamon Phelan hitting the crossbar midway through the half. Moylough despite a good amount of possession never really threatened the Celtic keeper. In the second half Moylough came close a number of times with a free kick being turned round the post midway through however the breakthrough came when good possession on the right allowed Eamon Phelan to turn in the area and send a shot into the bottom corner. Moylough tried in vain to get an equaliser but it was to no avail and Celtic held on for a valuable three points.

Skyvalley Rovers   1   Glen Celtic   0

Glen Celtic went down bravely away to Skyvalley Rovers on Saturday evening. It was an evening when nothing in front of goal went right for Celtic with Eamon Phelan and Youri Bondaverous both narrowly missing the target. Skyvalley on the other hand were creating a number of chances and despite the Celtic defence playing well they were breached midway through the first half when Liam Clogher managed to find the net. In the second half Celtic through everything into attack but to no avail. This allowed Skyvalley to attack on the break but Celtic’s defence were outstanding in the second half and nothing was going to get through.

Moore United  2  Glen Celtic  1

Glen Celtic Masters were away to Moore United on Saturday evening. In a game played in good conditions Celtic started well creating a number of chances. However as has been the story all through this league campaign creating chances is one thing but finishing them is another and despite the best efforts of everyone involved this was going to be an evening where once again finding the net was proving difficult. Luck is not something that this team have had throughout the season so don’t expect any lottery winners from this squad in the near future. Moore though were also creating chances but excellent defensive work was ensuring Celtic stayed in the game. Then with ten minutes left in the half Celtic were dealt a body blow when Moore were awarded a penalty and this was dispatched to put them one nil up. In the second half Celtic again dominated for long spells but couldn’t find the killer pass at the end of some very good movements. Moore doubled their advantage with 10 minutes to go with a very good goal. Celtic though never let the heads drop and were awarded a penalty with five minutes left which Johnny Mullarkey dispatched excellently. Despite continuous pressure for the last five minutes Celtic failed to find an equaliser and again came away with nothing. Everyone on the team gave it their all and despite some disappointing results there is still a great spirit within the squad.

Glen Celtic  2   Baylough Rovers  1

The Masters played their final league game on the season on Saturday evening and rounded off an indifferent league campaign with a good win over Baylough who were challenging Cam for the League title. Celtic started strongly but were rocked after 10 minutes when Baylough scored from a corner. To their credit though Celtic hit back and created a number of chances before they eventually equalized with a long distance free kick from Johnny Mullarkey which flew into the net. In the second half Celtic again began the half strongly however Baylough were dangerous in attack but a resolute Celtic defence were never going to allow Baylough any breathing room. Then with fifteen minutes left a great shot forced a good save from the Baylough keeper which fell to Johnny Mullarkey who from a tight angle rifled the ball to the net. Baylough to their credit came back at Celtic but to no avail with Celtic’s midfield and defence holding tight until the final whistle. Probably one of the best displays of the year so far. The preliminary round of the Cup is on next Saturday where the masters face Ballinasloe.

Glen Celtic  2   Ballinasloe Town   3

The Masters Cup run ended at the first hurdle in a game for so long looked so different. Celtic started well and took on the Ballinasloe defence only to be thwarted numerous times by the referees whistle for offside. Granted a number of these were actually offside but there were some very close calls. Ballinasloe started to come into the game and created a number of chances before Johnny Mullarkey hit a left foot shot that rifled to the net to put Celtic a goal up. Better was to come with Pat Browne doubling the advantage before half time putting Celtic in a strong position. However the second half was to prove a different story with Ballinasloe throwing caution to the wind and going all out in attack. Celtic were holding firm and it looked like they would still go through until Ballinasloe scored a well taken goal and then minutes later were awarded a penalty which was even more dubious than a lot of the offside calls. Up stepped Noel Lyons and even though the keeper for once guessed the right way it still ended up in the net. At the other end Gerry Carmody came close with a long range effort which the keeper did well to tip away and Johnny Mullarkey was unlucky as he was put through but missed a good chance. Extra time was required and Celtic were under pressure from the start which was increased when the referee awarded another penalty to Ballinasloe. Up stepped Noel Lyons again but this time the shot was well saved to keep the scores level. In the second half of extra time both teams threw caution to the wind and went for the win and unfortunately it was to be Ballinasloe who got the winning goal with a well struck shot from the edge of the box. Sandwiched in between all this action in extra time were a couple of red cards brandished to Celtic where not even the subs were safe as Paul Devlin was incorrectly sent off and he not even on the pitch. Disappoiinting finish to the season which was made even worse by some of the farcical decisions on the day. Well done to all the lads throughout the year who gave it their all - the Deep Heat can go back into storage for another six months.
