Upgrading of Cemetery

In 1996 the committee was formed and sat about upgrading the graveyard in 3 phases.

Phase 1:   On four consecutive Saturdays approximately 30 volunteers carried out phase 1, which involved planning out what needed done and improving the cemetery.
Phase 2:  Purchasing of the new cemetery.
Phase 3:  Archaeologist Jim Higgins was asked to come to Boyounagh.
His findings were very encouraging and interesting.

All 3 phases needed financing so house calls were made and letters were sent to locals (even those  who now live abroad) with encouraging response.

As one stands here in Boyounagh today one can transport oneself back a 1,000 years of history and find in every sight and sound living examples of the faith Patrick brought. The forms of the penal codes with their priest hunters have gone; the landlords and all they stood for, the one room cabins and dirt roads, all have gone. They all had their day and their day is gone with them, to the satisfaction of all people of reason and justice. Say a small prayer and reflect on the many human experiences these silent stones keep to themselves.
