Gerry Mee Memorial

A local born republican who became famous in the Listowel mutiny of 1920, when he refused to serve in the proposed new force of combined Black and Tans and Royal Irish Constabulary. Born in Knockauns in 1889, he served as secretary to Countess Markievitz in the Department of Labour in the Dáil. His memorial is situated on the Ballymoe Road at the Glenamaddy crossroads.

The inscription reads:

To the memory of
Jeremiah Mee 1889-1953
Knockauns, Glenamaddy
who in Listowel Barracks
on 19th June 1920
resigned from the R.I.C.
refusing to support the oppressive
policy
of the British Army and the
Black and Tans,
choosing instead
to risk life and liberty
in the struggle for Irish freedom.
"Ar meas agus moladh ar féin
agus a chomradaithe"
