Keelogues

Na Caelóga

Caológ meaning a narrow strip or ridge.

The Keelogues "Wisdom Stone" is one of a pair adorning the lawn of "The Yews". The stone, a boulder of a unique profile, is possibly of ritual origin or marks a burial or a land boundary. The oldest known owners of the lands here are the Burkes. They controlled the area and had a "Castle" approached by an avenue recently partly replanted. The Kennys later owned most of the Keelogues lands and had an agent by the name of Morgan. Morgan's family members finally acquired most of the extensive pastures, surrounded on two sides by bog or moor that provides the physical name of the townland. There is a shrine nearby called "Marian Shrine" built in 1987-88 . An open-air Mass is celebrated here annually. In the 1930's a major meeting took place at Keelogues crossroads addressed by Deputy Sean Broderick T.D. (Athenry) during theBlueshirt era of General Eoin O'Duffy.
