The Reilly estate consisted of
3631 acres in 1878. The exact origins of this estate however are not very clear. It has
been seen that outside owners like the Brownes of Westport and the Lanauze family had
property interests in the area. Another such family were the Ledwiths of Ledwithstown, Co.
Longford. In 1837 William Ledwith sold to Patrick Reilly the lands of Ballinstack and Cornacoyntia, totalling 228 acres, for £2,255. In 1844 Rev. Thomas
Lanauze sold to Patrick Reillys son, Michael Reilly, property including what was
referred to as the "Barrack Plot". Michael Reilly bought further property in the
Encumbered Estates Court after the Famine. This included part of the Clondoyle estate of Bartholomew Kelly and part of
Cloonlara. A deed of 1846 refers to
Patrick Reilly renting from Rev. Thomas Lanauze:
"the public crane or
weighing machine now being in the use of the market held every Wednesday" ,
at £7 yearly rent. Michael Reilly, who
died in 1876, had sons James, Patrick and Martin who was a solicitor.
