The test piece for the Championship Brass Section at the 2002 Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands national contest in Athlone has been announced. It is Fantasy for Brass Band by Malcolm Arnold. This challenging piece was written as the test piece for the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert hall in 1974. The Cory band won that day under the baton of Major Arthur Kenney.

The Stedfast band has played this piece before and the score that Brian uses is signed by the composer.

Our own choice piece is Music For A Festival by Philip Sparke. It is a lively modern piece with 3 movements (no break), the first, a Con Brio introducing a theme, the second an andantino and the third, a Vivo re-introducing the original theme towards the end. It is a demanding piece for all sections of the band and in stark contrast to the test piece.
