The
Sale of Bananas
Once the fruit has been ripened in the Ripening Centre, it is either despatched to customers directly, or it can be packed for special purposes. Some customers require bananas bagged in 4's or 7's for instance, and others prefer small bananas in "kid's packs". A large proportion of the bananas will be delivered to supermarket distribution depots, the remainder going to wholesale markets and independent shops.
The banana is the biggest selling item of all the many thousands sold in a supermarket. With people becoming ever more aware of the need to eat healthily and to take regular exercise, the benefits to be derived from eating bananas become increasingly significant. A bananas contains around 95 calories, and very little fat. It is full of energy-giving carbohydrate and brimming with vitamins and minerals. Bananas are a living tropical fruit. They must be handled with care, stored under the correct conditions. Bananas make such a colourful display that they are often positioned as the "first in flow" at the very front of the store.
