"I am attaching all the information we have in our records regarding
James Leonard O’Connor. He was a Junior Scholastic in the College.
This doesn’t mean he was a Scholarship Boy but that he had expressed
an interest in joining the Congregation who ran the College, the
Holy Ghost Fathers, known nowadays as Spiritans. Many young boys
joined the Junior Scholasticate. They lived in separate quarters
from the boarders but had classes with the boarders and day
students. The Scholastics had extra duties to prepare them for the
hard life of the missions and extra religious duties in the chapel
etc. If it was decided, or if the student decided, that a vocation
wasn’t for him, he left the College although in this situation some
scholastics became boarders. There was no pressure to stay and many
Scholastics decided at the end of their time in Blackrock not to
continue to the Senior Scholasticate to begin their studies for the
priesthood; many others were ordained. Their fee was much less than
that of the boarders or day students as this gave opportunities to
those whose families could not have afforded to send their sons to
the College. Sometimes the fee was paid by a generous benefactor,
known or unknown.

It would seem that Leonard left the Scholasticate but we have no
record of whether he or the Director of the Scholasticate made the
decision that he wasn’t suited for the life of a missionary.

Although the latest book on the history of the College, published in
2011, covers the period 1860-1910, there is no mention of Leonard
O’Connor and he isn’t in any of the photos.
There was a disastrous fire in the College archives in 1984 and an
enormous amount of material was lost.
Yours sincerely,
Caroline Mullan Archivist Blackrock College Blackrock Co Dublin
