Plug in your USB key into the front of the PS3. Then, simply navigate to the Music section on the XMB and look for your USB key. Then hit Triangle and select 'display all'. You will now see a full list of files contained on your USB key and can play your music from there.

When selecting a file, if you hit triangle, you will be given the option to copy the file from your USB key to the PS3 also.
