MEMORIAL

Although this web page is dedicated to my grandfather and the men of the Empire Mica. It should be remembered that these men were only a handful of people who died in
World War 2.

The Tower Hill Memorial commemorates men of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both world wars and who have no known grave. It stands on the south side of the garden of Trinity Square, London, close to the Tower of London.

The men of the Empire Mica are remembered on Panel 44

The following description is courtesy of the Commonwealth War Graves web site

The 1939-45 Memorial takes the form of a semi-circular sunken garden surrounded by walls. The internal face of the semi-circular wall is cased in bronze which bears in relief the names of the men commemorated. At regular intervals round this bronze casing are seven stone sculptured allegorical figures representing the Seven Seas. From the 1914-1918 Memorial stone steps lead down to the sunken garden and between the flight of steps is the main dedicatory inscription, which reads:

1939-1945 THE TWENTY-FOUR THOUSAND OF THE MERCHANT NAVY AND FISHING FLEETS WHOSE NAMES ARE HONOURED ON THE WALLS OF THIS GARDEN GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVE BUT THE SEA.

May God bless you all

"They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them."
