Last Thursday our class went
to visit the local net factory. Our teacher Mrs Dougal and
Mrs Doherty accompanied us on the trip. The factory is owned by
Mr. Pat Mc Laughlin
and is opened for about twenty years. The longest serving employee is
Mr John Bonner.
The raw materials for the factory are obtained from Italy.
The first process we saw was a machine called the Extruder.
The Extruder gets feed
grains of plastic and crystal, which then melt and form strings.
The colour of the
string is determined by the colour of the grains. They then stretch it and
cool it.
They are then put on a machine that braids them. They are then put on
plastic reels.
The next machine that we saw put three braids together. You put three
reels of twine
on it and the machine would join them together. We then saw the greatest
machine.
This machine made the twine into a net and is called a loom. Each time the
machine
made a row of netting it would go to the men on the bottom floor that would
check the nets in case the machine made a mistake.
My class and myself thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the net factory, we found
it both educational and worthwhile. It was very nice of Mr Mc Laughlin to
let
us visit his factory and for us to have his son and nephew to show us around.

First we went
to the main
reception. Then we went to talk to the reporters.
We asked lots of questions, the journalists answered all of them. Next we
went to the paste up room. We saw the man put wax on the paper. He told us
that about 26,000 papers are printed on a Tuesday and 26,500 on Friday.
He also said the paper comes to them from chemical pulp, old paper and
trees.
We saw Tir Conaill being printed and Fridays Journal being printed.
We went to the process room. Negatives are put on plates. The plates
are now ready for printers. They make bromide pictures from ordinary
photos. Orla's Mammy and Donna's Mammy came to help Mrs Reidy. Then
we went to see the paper being printed. It was like a roller coaster.
We all got free newspapers. We got our photo taken too. Then we went
back on the bus to Greencastle. I enjoyed it very muchand I would like
to say a big thank you to Mrs Reidy. I think she is the best teacher in
the world.

My visit to
planet
perspective, I thought was going to be boring but boy
was I wrong. The planet was said to be an eating jungle and if man entered,
he would never be seen again. Since the new planet was discovered many
school tours have turned to its attraction. Fortunately ours was one,
it's a great experience and you will all have such a great time said Mrs
Bould. The spaceship took off on the 2nd of October 1992 and planned to
be back for the 4th of October 1993. We arrived on the core of planet
perspective on the 5th of December. We were well instructed by Master
Hingis to stay well away from the doors and that we were only staying on
the core. "Stay with you guardian beside your telescope" he
instructed.
But where were Mairead and I at that time. Unfortunately we were both at
the toilet and we hadn't heard the instruction, the next thing we both
knew we were both lost and didn't know what to do, all I could remember
was that we floated through a steel door. Just then I spotted another
steel door so we floated over to it even though it was quite difficult.
I held out a hand and pulled the iron lever. The next thing we saw a
flying asteroid and loads of spaceships and thousands of stars which were
hovering helplessly. We both thought quickly as the asteroid grew closer.
We ducked as low as possible and the asteroid flew right over us.
The next thing we noticed was that we were falling through the core and
had landed in a perspective box that had never ended. Our only way of
escape was our tickets there were little slots on the wall every half a
mile or so and you had to keep walking constantly as the path was steady
moving. It was horrific the slots on the side of the wall kept getting
larger with teeth hungry for tickets. A hot breath swept over my neck,
and suddenly my spacesuit wasn't on me anymore it had disappeared.
We both eondered why we were walking again but walking so fast smoke
was coming from our trainers and we were both pumping sweat. We could
still hear laughs of the ticket slot teeth and the groans, I was
wishing and praying to God that we had tickets but that was unlikely
knowing our luck. I thought I'd give it a try I pulled down the zip to
my trousers and put my hand in my pocket, just then I saw huge eyes
staring at us hands of fire reached out at us and more raging roars of
laughter we were both running now falling over every now and again,
struggling to get back on our feet the hingry ticket slots reached out
and grabbed my piece of paper and shoved it into its hungry mouth with
great disgust. Then the ground suddenly jerked and stopped and we fell
to our feet, something glittered on the floor beside us. Mairead picked
it up and as soon as she did we started to float. We foated higher and
higher then we were back in starry space. Just then anasteroid came near,
this time not as fast. in fact it wasn't at all. The next thing we knew
was that we were on the asteroid and we were floating back into the
spaceship.
We heard our names being called by many people we answered them, but I
answered Mum by waking up. "Maria, wake up or you'll be late for
lift off!!!"
