Greystones Orchestra was established in 1989 by a small group
of musicians who's aim was to "stimulate interest in music and
encourage muscians of all standards". Little did they know that
within a decade their early enthusiasm would develop into a multi
cultural orchestra with players from America, Australia, England,
France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Singapore and Switzerland,
all with the common language of music.
Fergus Sheil was our first principal conductor and continued
until his appointment as Chorus Master of Scottish Opera in Glasgow
in 1998. Fergus has appeared in concert in the UK with the Northern
Sinfonia and in Ireland with the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Orchestra
of St Cecilia, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and many other groups.
Formerly Chorus Master / Head of Music of Opera Ireland, Fergus
has worked at Wexford Festival Opera since 1993 as assistant conductor
and he has also directed contemporary Irish works for Opera Theatre
Company.
Davd Brophy, Shane O'Shea and Iarlaith Carter have all graced
the podium with the Greystones Orchestra. In 2000, we appointed
Ronan O'Reilly as conductor. Find out more about Ronan by clicking
HERE.
Our repertoire has covered a wide variety of works to include
soloists in wind, strings and voice and for our 10th anniversary
concert we performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto no. 2 with
pianist Conor Linehan under the baton of Shane O'Shea.
In December 2000, members of the Artane Boys Band joined us in
a Christmas Concert in Clane, Co. Kildare where we accompanied
the Clane Choir with Leroy Anderson's Christmas Festival, Sleigh
Ride and Wilcox Carols.
Greystones is a mixed ability orchestra and we always welcome
new members who can be assured of a friendly, relaxed but busy
practice night. We rehearse in the YWCA in Greystones on Monday
nights at 8pm. If you are interested in joining the orchestra,
