What is spyware ?

Basically, spyware (also known as malware and adware) is software installed on a computer without the user's knowledge which can gather information about that computer and it's user for later retrieval by whomever controls the spyware.

It is estimated that 94% of pc's are infected with at least one form of spyware.

It is estimated that 90% of spyware removal programs actually install spyware.

What information can spyware gather ?

Any information stored on your computer or typed in to your computer is potentially collectable by some of these spyware programs. Information such as a history of websites you visited, personal details from any of your files, personal details typed on your keyboard such as bank details and credit card numbers, addresses and phone numbers. Some spyware, known as dialers, can use your computer to dial premium rate telephone numbers (these should show up on your telephone bill).

How does the spyware get on to my computer ?

There are a number of avenues by which spyware can end up being installed on your pc or laptop.

The most common of these is that some spyware and especially adware is bundled in with free software. The user installs the free software and thereby installs the spyware alongside. In many of these cases, uninstalling the free software leaves the spyware behind on the user's computer.

Another regular occurrence is that user's are often duped into installing software on their computer by clicking on those ads that purport to scan your pc for spyware or speed up your computer.

More recently, the very act of visiting certain websites can cause a program to download in the background onto your pc (known as "drive-by-downloads").

Anyone using file-sharing programs to download music files, software, video files, pictures etc. are very much at risk. Often, these files can contain embedded code which can launch a malicious program, be it spyware or a virus.

What to do (or not) if you suspect you have spyware on your computer ?

Don't use the internet if possible. Plug out the modem line from your pc or laptop until the spyware has been removed from your system.

If you must use the internet then don't divulge any personal information.
