What is a computer virus ? A computer virus is basically a computer program created specifically to invade computers and networks without the user's knowledge, and against the user's wishes. Some viruses can cause mischief which is minor, such as causing an image or a message to appear on your screen, but generally speaking, viruses are designed to cause damage to your data, to alter files, and can even go so far as to completely erase your hard drive.
How can you make your computer 100% secure ? The simple answer to this is that you can't unless you turn it off, or never connect to the internet and never insert a floppy disk or a cd-rom into your pc!!! But of course, what use would your pc really have if you followed this advice.
The real issue is how to make your computer 99% secure when you are connected to the internet or are using someone else's floppies and cd's.
The 3 basic steps to securing your pc are: 1) Install a reputable firewall and keep it updated regularly 2) Install a reputable anti-virus package and keep it updated regularly. 3) Make sure your operating system has all the latest security updates.
In addition to this, you should only install software if you know it's from a trusted source. When using someone else's floppies or cd's, use your anti-virus software to scan the contents of the disk before use.
What to do (or not) if you suspect you have a virus on your computer ? Don't PANIC! Make a back-up of all your important files, such as word and excel documents, pictures etc. Don't share this disk until it is checked out.
Don't connect to the internet. If you use broadband then plug out the connection cable from your computer.
Don't use your e-mail software (such as Outlook) to send or receive any mail.
Don't share your floppies or cd's with anyone (until you can get them checked).
