Gulu: MIG Fighter planes sweeping over city 22 Oct 2002
Two old Russian-made MIG fighter planes have been sweeping at low
range over the city of Gulu, around 300km north of Kampala. The planes,
without any identification emblems, land and take off from the local
airport.
Some witnesses, that managed to approach the crafts, told MISNA that
they saw men with clearly Slavic features in pilot uniforms. The MIG,
armed with air ground missiles, are the first planes stationed in Gulu
since 1976, when Amin Dada was the dictator of Uganda.
The presence of the two fighter planes enters in serious contrast with
declarations of the current President Yoweri Museveni, who has always
claimed to not be interested in providing his nation with a military
aviation.
As far as it is known Uganda does not own any military aircrafts. In
the past days also the presence of a large cargo plane with the capacity
to even carry tanks was reported at the same airport. While in Kampala
there are reportedly other planes, always cargo and Russian-made, probably
Antonovs.
For the moment the presence of these military air forces in Ugandan
territory, the nationality of the crafts and the objective of the missions
remain unclear.
