SHIA, SUNNI UNITE TO
HOLD BACK OCCUPATION FORCES

Increasing unity among Shia and Sunni communities in Iraq is holding to a standstill the US efforts to regain military control.

The US miitary today was claiming "measurable progress" in it's assault on Fallujah. But after more than three days the marines have managed to advance just over a mile say local reports.

Fighting this week has cost the lives of around 500 Iraqis; at least 36 US soldiers; and an unknown number of US mercenaries.

Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr's militia now has full control over the southern cities of Kut, Kufa, and some of Najaf. Police in those cities have abandoned their stations or stood aside.

Resistance fighters also have control of parts of Baghdad and of course Fallujah. The resistance is vying for control of Karbala and occupation forces in Samarra came under attack today.

The unrest also spread to northern Iraq for the first time as U.S. troops in Hawijah, near Kirkuk, fired on an angry mob protesting American tactics in Fallujah, killing eight Iraqis.
