The
Parish of Kilronan takes it's name from Kilronan Abbey just outside
Keadue. Two thirds of the parish area is mountain. It is bounded
on the North east by Lough Allen the first and most spectacular
of the Shannon lakes. The Shannon runs along the South East while
the river Feorish Guards the South and the West. The Mountain ranges
traverse the Northern border. |
This
is spectacular country with the country's higest waterfalls, breathtaking
scenic views, megalithic remains from 3000 B.C. and a wealth of
tradition, myth and heritage to back it all up. The numerous Lakes
and Rivers are unpolluted and are home to some of th ecountries

The parish of Kilronan
consists of three villages :
KEADUE : Beside the village is
Kilronan Castle, Kilronan Abbey, O'Carolans grave, Greyfield House,
Lasair's well, the Cistrachan in Greyfield, Passage graves at Crosshill,
Chamber Cairn on Kilronan mountain overlooking Keadue, Cooking Mounds
in carrowbeg, The Banshee Split Rock near Carrowbeg House and the
Gaint's Graves near the Southern shores of Lough Meelagh and Knockranny
House.

ARIGNA : IRELAND'S MINING CAPITAL
for OVER 400 YEARS, Mines are all closed now but the old workings
and spoil heaps dot the hills. First Iron and later Coal were mined
here. There are rich deposits of various minerals in the Arigna
Mountains. Arigna Fuels coal briquette factory continues the coal
industry in the area. The hills are rich in megalithic remains,
DOON-the old Tuatha-de Danann headquarters is possibly the most
notable.
There are about 50 Sweat Houses in the area. There are some six
Mass Rocks.

BALLYFARNON : This village is an
important commercial and trading centre. Situated on the Keadue
side of the village is Alderford House where O'Carolan lived. Near
Lough Skean and on the river Feorish it is Roscommon's most Northerly
Town. |
