Victorious Senior Hurling team of 1981.
An unbelievable Ned Buggy goal in the dying minutes gave Faythe Harriers a sensational 2-10 to 2-9 victory over a shell-shocked Buffers Alley side In a marvellous Senior hurling final in Bellefleld on October 25th.
It was a sensational game, and no fiction writer could have produced such a fairy tale ending. With two minutes of an exciting and hugely entertaining contest remaining, Buffers Alley looked like certainties to take the cup as they held a seemingly secure 2-9 to 1-10 lead.
Then Faythe Harriers forward, Brendan Murphy, was upended in the square and Ned Buggy stepped up to take the most important penalty of his life. His rasping shot was destined for the top corner, but at the last second Fr. Martin Casey stretched to deflect the sliothar to safety.
Harriers players protested that it had gone over the bar, but a '65 was awarded by the umpire. Acting on orders from the sideline, Buggy dropped a high delivery into the square. It soared over the heads of backs and forwards alike, landed at the feet of Henry Butler, and deflected to his left into the net to give the Harriers a sensational win.
The Alley could only look on in disbelief as the Wexford town team celebrated their fourth title win, but it was richly- deserved. The victors showed a calm maturity without the services of injured defender Willie Murphy, and a goal from captain, john Walker, after six minutes helped them on their way to a 1-6 to 0-6 half-time lead.
A Buffers Alley switch, which brought Ger Sweeney to midfield, began to payoff in the second-half, and a Pat Lacey goal with nine minutes left put them ahead. Tony Doran had proved an effective decoy, distracting the defence by running out of position as a Fr. Martin Casey delivery came in.
Three minutes later Doran added another goal when he seemed to be in the square before the ball, but the Harriers refused to die and snatched that memorable win in the dying stages. Centre-back Seamus O'Connor won the man of the match award, with Jimmy Goodison, 'Heffo' Walsh, Liam Bennett and Paddy O'Gorman also in the reckoning.Barry Murphy, Pat Kenny, Colm Doran and Ger Sweeney were outstanding for the Alley.
