The larva is a polyphage, eating the foliage of many deciduous trees and herbaceous plants, and can be found all year round. Overwinters as a larva.

The adult has a very distinctive wing pattern, with a 'portrait' between the moth's head and central roundels. Fresh specimens have an olive/pink/brown coloration. Flight time: May to October.

Older specimens fade to an overall rust colour.
