My garden.

Heavy showers.

Ideal weather for mosses. Polytrichum formosum is my most common large 'hair cap moss'. This shot is just a row of them growing between two strata in our soft micaceous schist. The layer was freshly exposed when my house was built 8 years ago, and I like the idea of plants growing in soil that is millions of years old.

The tips of these shoots are slightly swollen, giving a hint of what is about to come: the sporing shoot (right). The brown bits are old sporing stalks (and capsules).

And this is the male antheridia, with new growth just emerging.

A new (to me) moss growing beside the Polytrichum. The first shot shows new sporing growth, and the second shows new capsules forming. This is a very tiny moss, with both images covering about 2 centimetres. Campylopus introflexus.

These appear to be last year's capsules on the same moss.
