20th January |
Moss and lichen hunting in recently deforested Heath.
Showers and squalls all day. |
Two mosses and two lichens: Polytrichum formosum (brown, mostly centre to lower right) and Pleurozium schreberi (green, fern-like) mosses. Peltigera membranacea (black with orange fruit-bodies) and Trapelia coarctata (black dots on orange, right) lichens. The Trapelia is a clear sign of recent disturbance: it is an early coloniser. Did anyone spot the Slender St. Johns Wort? |
Two unidentified mosses (taken in anticipation of my imminent new moss handbook.) The specimen on the right has many similarities with Tortula muralis, but doesn't look quite right.
Did anyone spot the Ox-eye Daisy? |
I think the red colouration makes this Lecidella elaeochroma. A couple of other lichens are distributed round the edge of this one. |
Xanthoria parietina on rock for a change. I don't know what the pale grey ones with wrinkled fruit-bodies are.
