Most of today's images feature this large and attractive Chironomid - Cricotopus sylvestris. Previously I've only seen the female, but today every specimen - and there were thousands - was male. Length about 12mm.

As far as I can work out, the Alder Fly has nothing whatsoever to do with the Alder tree. |
This Mayfly - a Baetid - was perched unharmed on a spider's web. |
I spotted Thyme-leaved Speedwell last week, but that was in the pouring rain. |
A few Smooth Newts were still hiding under stones. |
And I found this cluster of Beetle eggs under one of the stones. |
A different Chironimid, about 6 mm long. |
