A limestone obelisk erected in 1888 marks the site
on the edge of the Curragh of Kildare known as
Donnelly's hollow. Dan Donnelly was born in Dublin in
1788 and was one of seventeen children. Standing over six
feet in height, little is known of his early life other than
that his father was a carpenter and Dan followed him in the trade.
