In Johnstown Churchyard a Celtic Cross marks the grave of Richard Southwell Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo, Lord Naas, his family home was at nearby Pamerstown House. He was M.P. for County Kildare from 1847-1852. This distinguished statesman and scholar was Viceroy of India from 1868-1872. Her was assassinated on the 8th February 1872, while on a tour of inspection on the Andaman Islands and his remains were brought back to Ireland and received in State with great ceremony by the Lord-Lieutenant. Tradition says his body was transported home from India in a barrel of rum, hence his nickname "The Pickled Earl".
