Mark Kennedy this morning dramatically withdrew from the Ireland World Cup squad, according to reports. The Wolverhampton winger appeared to have allayed any injury fears after playing 83 minutes of last night's testimonial match against Sunderland. But he is believed to have suffered a reaction to the groin strain which has tormented him for the past month, and this morning admitted to manager Mick McCarthy that he will not be fit enough to travel. Kennedy was said to be devastated at missing out on the trip to Japan, but his loss will spell good news for Stephen Reid or Colin Healy, one of whom will be drafted in to replace the unlucky Dubliner. I don't mean to be unkind (but I'm going to be anyway) but Kennedy will be no loss. The only thing he did during the qualifying campaign was get pissed and jump on cars. He never performs when needed. Better a less skillful player who'll give his all than a highly skilled one who never seems to be bothered. IP: Logged |

Fair enough Dodger. They wouldn't be the greatest to ever wear the green shirt but at least they will put in 100% when they play. Nothing annoys me more than the player (in any sport) who has the talent but not the commitment. I'd take Connolly/Kilbane 100 times before I'd take the likes of Kennedy. IP: Logged |

Quinn is 36 and can hardly run nowadays. He has no business going there. Cunningham is not an international defender...if you think he is you know very little about the game. IP: Logged |

quote: Cunningham's club career notwithstanding he has played well enough at international level since his debut to deserve higher praise than you seem willing to give orion. I disagree with you about Quinn because of what he can offer in the dressing room, though you may have a point in purely footballing terms. But I can't understand how anybody can be anything less than very impressed with Cunningham. IP: Logged |

quote: kenny cunningham is an experienced talented defender who can play centre back or right back. he is calm and very cool. he is also extremely loud and commanding in holding the line in the defence which you would know if you knew anything about the game or even saw ireland play live even once with cunningham. incidentally would you name the players you would bring in to replace them. and explain why they would improve the squad rather than just throw out a few names. I already told you Twice as Nice my job takes me to London a dozen times a year so I make a point to go and see Palace, Wimbledons, etc., and am well versed with Cunnigham. Unlike you, whose only sighting of him is playing a game now and again. Cunnighman is very one paced and ball watches a lot, and to be honest, is not very strong in the tackle. Lets be real, if he was any good he would'nt still be with the Dons now would he. And, for Ireland he is not good enough anymore to play as a full back or in the middle...so he is behind Staunton, Breen, Dunne, and O'Brien at this stage. So, if Ireland has 4 centre backs why bring him? Therefor bring players who will add something: Healy for one, who will be a handy player very soon, Delap who is quite a useful utility player. He is two footed and good in the air. And, like a player who was " 10 years ahead of his time " can ghost into positions. But, you probably have no idea what that is about either. Reid I heard has been added which is good news. IP: Logged |

No, but I go to games where the Irish lads are playing, plus, it is far easier to get tickets nowadays than the Premiership ( which is way overpriced for the football that is played ). Some of the most enjoyment I have had has been down at Craven Cottage....in fact, when Best and Marsh played there years ago it was good entertainment. But, I go to Highbury and Stamford Bridge from time to time. And, re Walter Mitty??? Walter Mitty lived out his fantasies in real life....how can you say going to watch div 1 sides makes me like that??? You must be an idiot to write something like that. IP: Logged |

Orion, when it comes to footballing terms, we're going to have to agree to dissagree. Keane and Cunningham should not and wont retire after the world cup. Cunningham will make the first team next month providing he stays injury free. I dissagree that he's behind the ranks of Breen, O'Brien and Dunne. It IS worth bringing Quinn to the world cup. You seem to be the only one thinks he isnt! He's the only striker we have that experienced in major touraments up front and that experience in invaluable in the dressing room. SS IP: Logged |
