Procedures for Yard Supervision

It is the duty of the Deputy Principal to organise a roster for Yard Supervision. This is done at the beginning of the week. There are two breaks each day in school which need to be supervised, 10.50am to 11.00am and 12.35pm to 1.00pm. Teachers bring children to the yard from their classroom. Teachers on yard duty remain in the yard until children are collected at the end of the break by their own class teacher.
The yard area is divided into two sections, yard one is for children from Junior Infants to 2nd class, and yard two is for children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class. Yard one is supervised by a teacher and a classroom assistant, yard two by another teacher.
Children in the junior yard must not climb on the wall or fence. They must not cross the white line at the entrance to the school or enter the area between the back block and the gym hall. Children in the junior yard are not allowed to play with footballs. Hopscotch and snakes and ladders are painted on the tarmac for playing.
Children in third class play football on a tarmac area between the junior and senior yard each day.
Children in 4th, 5th and 6th classes play football on the football court or field or basketball on the basketball court. If a ball goes over the fence, no child may retrieve it without permission from the teacher on duty. No child may enter the school building without permission from the supervising teacher.
