Scoil Mhuire Newsletter

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

As we move into the last term of the school year we are busy with a lot of projects and activities. All staff and pupils wish Fr. French a speedy recovery from his illness. We miss his frequent visits to the school.

  • Our Green school committee continues to work on eliminating litter and enhancing the school grounds with shrub and bulb planting. Our litter wardens are continuing to pick up a lot of wrappers after play times. We would encourage parents to remember our healthy lunch policy and only allow one small bar in a lunch box. We expect to be assessed for the Green Flag this month by a representative from An Taisce.
  • 3rd and 5th classes begin their swimming sessions in the JFK Memorial Pool in New Ross this Thursday for a period of 8 weeks.
  • A special treat for Infant to 4th classes next week when the very creative and popular Spring Onion Puppet Theatre return with their current show Moving House on Friday 25th April. Cost per child is €2.
  • There will be a staff meeting on Thursday April 24th at 2pm. The usual arrangements of infant collection at 1.30 and no early bus will apply.
  • Congratulations to the U13 Quiz team of Orla Whelan, Alison Boland, Ann Nolan and Michael Coyne who did extremely well to place fifth in the All Ireland competition at the RDS on Sun 6th April.
  • Congratulations to Lauren Murphy in 5th class who won a €100 sports voucher for her entry in the Irish Pride, “Pride in our School” competition.
  • Ellen Elmes did exceptionally well to be get a Special Merit award in this year’s Texaco Art competition which attracted 32,000 entries. You can view her picture on www.texacochildrensart.com
  • The local GAA club are now selling shorts and socks following on from the huge success with the “Horeswood Hoodie”. They are available for sale and collection this Thursday( 17th ) at 7.30pm at the Indoor complex. The last order for the summer will be placed in the coming weeks. Contact Eileen O’Sullivan or Trish Hayes for further details .
  • Gambia support: As you are aware Scoil Mhuire has established strong ties with a new primary school in the Gambia built as the result of monies raised throughout Wexford and Waterford and with local man Joe Ryan a key person in the Project.A container bound for the school in the Gambia will leave Ireland at the end of May. We are sending old blackboards which have become redundant with our Interactive Boards. The school needs basic items such as copy books, crayons and coloured pencils and we are asking families to add a pack of copies or colouring pencils to their shopping over the coming weeks to donate to the school in the Gambia.
  • Community Games: The Community Games athletics finals will be held at the Field Day on Sunday May 11th which begins at 1pm. Races will start at 2pm. Further details will follow.

Well done to Oisín Bridges, Jake Dunne and Ellen Elmes, all winners in the County art competition.
