Hi! Harry here! There are lots of brilliant hurlers in Ireland but at the moment everyone think the best hurler is Kilkenny's DJ Carey. He was HURLER OF THE YEAR IN 2000. You can find out more about him here and read his tips for the top!!

Name: Denis Joseph Carey

Age: 30

Club: Young Irelands (Gowran)

Position: Full-Forward

Honours won: 3 All-Ireland medals (1992, 1993, 2000), 6 Leinster medals (1991-93, 1998-2000), 8 All-Star Awards, 1 Minor All-Ireland, 1 Under-21 All-Ireland, Hurler of the Year 1993 & 2000. I HAVE ALSO WON ALL-IRELANDS & WORLD TITLES IN HANDBALL.

Best game ever played: It would have to be the All-Ireland Quarter-Final, 1997 against Galway. We won 4-15 to 3-16.

What do you like about playing hurling?: I think hurling is a great game. It is great for keeping fit. But most of all I have made a lot of friends from playing the game and the thrill of playing in front of 60,000 people is incredible.

DJ'S TIPS FOR THE TOP

  • You should practice as often as you can. The best way to do this is to hit a ball off a wall. You should practice off both sides, from your left and your right.

  • Listen to your coaches and trainers. They have played and watched the game longer than you have!

  • Have all the right equipment you need, especially a helmet!

  • Be prepared for the lows as well as the highs.

  • Look carefully at how the great hurlers practice every skill and try and practice these again and again.
