The Year That Was

And so we come to the end of another fencing year. As the rest of us hung up our foils, epees and sabres for the Summer, our top fencers were flying the flag in Cape Town at the World Championships - more information inside.

Internationally, it was an important year as fencing received unprecedented TV coverage at the Atlanta Olympics.

In Irish Fencing, the focus of the year has been the improvement of competition standards, through the purchase of new pistes, the movement of Irish safety standards towards those internationally approved and the hopeful improvement of presiding following two successful presiding courses.

The year saw the raising of £1,500 which allows for continued improvements in Irish Fencing, the election to the OCI of Tom Rafter to ensure that the voice of Irish Fencing is heard at the highest level of Irish sports administration, and the receipt of a grant from the Department of Education towards a computer and fax machine.

It was also a year of sadness with the death of Stephen Costello but his memory is kept alive in Irish fencing circles through the prestigious Costello Cup presented annually for outstanding sportsmanship.

IAFF News

AGM
Having completed the 1996/1997 fencing year, notification of this year's Annual General Meeting to be held on 2nd October 1997, has been sent to members who are eligible to vote. At the AFM the two most important issues covered are the presentation of the annual accounts and the election for the forthcoming year of the officers to the committee. Please come along and make known your views.

Funding
In Issue 3 of Irish Fencing News there was coverage of the change in management of sports funding from the OCI to the Department of Education. At that time it was unclear what level of funding would be available for the various sports , or when or how funds would be allocated. Following months of lobbying and a meeting with the Department of Education, the IAFF has now secured some funding which will go primarily towards international fencing.

However, with the change of Government and the creation of the new Department of Tourism, Sport and Leisure (Minister Jim McDaid) we will no longer be dealing with the Department of Education. We are hopeful that our sport will get more timely information and financial assistance in the future, as Minister McDaid has already stated in the national press that he "would like to see as many sports getting funding" which looks promising for us.

Irish Fencing News completes its first year.

So, how many of you sceptics didn’t believe it would happen?

Irish Fencing News has now not only completed its first year, with the planned four editions! Many of you have made complimentary noises about its publication, which were very nice to hear. As was stated in the first issue, Irish Fencing News was intended for the exchange of views and opinions of Irish fencers. It was hoped to have a Club News and a Letters section. Unfortunately these could only have happened through your input or our fiction (for which we might have been accused of libel).

Before we go into Year 2, we need to know if Irish Fencing News should be continued and if so, what changes need to be made so that it can be the informative publication it was planned to be. SO.PLEASE...HELP!

FIE News

The FIE held its annual Congress in South Africa during the World Championships in July. Tom Rafter and Nuala McGarrity represented the IAFF at the Congress. The main items of interest to fencers were:

1. A referee (president) will not be replaced during a match except in exceptional circumstances, e.g. illness

2. In future, in poules, after a 4-4 score double hits are ignored, e.g. no more V5 D5.

Franco-Irish Exchange

It has been confirmed that another Franco-Irish exchange will take place this year. For those of you who did not participate the last time, the Franco-Irish Exchange involved a week-long visit from a French coach who put a group of nominees from each club through a rigorous programme of fencing and fitness exercises.

More details of this in the next issue.

Monitor Workshop

Following the very enjoyable and informative presiding workshop, it has been decided to invite Ron Howard to return to Dublin in the near future. This time the object of his visit will be to run a short "Monitor" workshop.

This workshop will be to help individuals who are involved but not qualified in coaching to improve their skills in this area. It is strongly recommended that each club nominate a participant for this workshop - please forward your nominee to Nuala McGarrity as soon as possible so that a suitable date can be arranged.

Presiding Workshop

Ron Howard, visiting from the UK, put a small group of fencers through their (Presiding) paces over two days during May. The workshop consisted of techniques to help new presidents "read the phrase" fluently and confidently. Although Ron’s workshop concentrated mainly on foil it was not considered to be inaccessible for non-foilists, as one participant was happy to tell us:...

Recently, I took part in the presiding workshop run by the IAFF. Without experience in the weapon, I found myself thrown in at the deep end in regard to the rules and protocol involved in the art of foil fencing.

After this workshop, I have a greater admiration for those who stand up at competitions and take on the job of presiding, and in doing so, put their reputations on the line, especially those who have EARNED the right to call themselves "President".

I look on Presidents and presiding with different eyes now, and with a respect gained from placing myself in the position of having to read and control a match, obviously not with the confidence and finesse that experienced Presidents posses, but at least I learned the basics.

I doubt I will ever question any President’s judgement because although they are human and just as fallible as the rest of us, they are also the ones who take the flak when we as fencers give them abuse because we didn’t make ourselves clear to them.

Overall, it was a demanding, frustrating, thwarting, but thoroughly exhilarating course and I am glad that I decided to brave the unknown and learn. Ron Howard is a very knowledgeable and entertaining man, with the knack for teaching and passing on his love of the sport. More of the same, thank you!

Fencing People

Ioan Pop of Romania has just become the very first technical director of the FIE. From 1990 to 1994, he was the technical director of the Romanian Federation, before becoming national coach to Tunisia. Prior to that he had a distinguished career as a sabreur, having won the World Junior Championships in 1974 and the University Games in 1977. He also fenced at Senior World Championship and Olympic level. His new role will include the introduction and promotion of fencing in countries where it is unfamiliar. In this capacity, he has already been to India preparing to set up a fencing school in Bengalore.

On the personal front, Ioan Pop has a degree in philosophy, is married to Beatrix and has two children.

Fencing Hip (?)

In case you didn’t know it, fencing is set to become a new trend. That is, according to one Sean Newsom, who says: "Right now, fencing is very very hip and a favourite keep-fit sport of chic, metropolitan America" (GQ Active July/August 97). The Sunday Times has even gone so far as to use fencing kit as accessories in a recent fashion spread. Don’t forget to organise your make-up and stylist for the coming season. - White is IN.

Dates for Your Diary

The 1997/1998 fencing season starts in September, and, as you will all be aware, this is the time when club affiliation and IAFF licences fall due for renewal.

If you wish to have an event included in the IAFF Calendar, please submit draft entry form with first and second choice dates to the Hon. Secretary, IAFF, Branksome Dene, Frankfort Park, Dublin 14 as soon as possible. The sooner your proposed dates arrive the better as it will then be possible to complete a Calendar with an even spread of events.

Carrickfergus Castle Tournament

A new mixed epee competition was held in the very beautiful Carrickfergus Castle in July. The event was organised by Coleraine in conjunction with the local county council.

The Vinnie Perpetual Sabre Cup

Oisín Fencing Club are pleased to announce that Vinnie Duffy has presented a brand new fencing cup - "The Vinnie". In recognition of Vinnie’s distinguished career as a sabreur this cup will be presented to the winner of a new men’s sabre competition which will take place at Our Lady’s National School, Ballinteer, on Saturday September 20 1997.

Apart from celebrating Vinnie’s long involvement in Irish fencing, it is hoped that by running a competition specifically for sabreurs more people will be encouraged to take up this weapon. To this end the organisers would like to know as soon as possible whether there are enough women out there to make up at least one pool. A decision will be made regarding a separate women’s competition on Monday September 1, so any women interested in entering should notify the organisers by that date. (Oisín FC @ 847 4815)

Abroad

World Championships

The 1997 World Championships took place in Cape Town, South Africa, this month. Three fencers were selected to represent Ireland in Men’s Epee; Michael O’Brien, Daragh Quinn and John Twomey. All three made it to first round of DE with John Twomey achieving getting into the second round, where he was eliminated by Cuomo of Italy, and was placed fifty-five.

For the first time in many years there was also an Irish representative in the Veteran’s Championship - Tom Rafter came eleventh in Men’s Epee - well done, Tom, this is one of Ireland’s highest results at World Championship level.

Our boys also competed in the team epee event where they beat Croatia and were eliminated by Cuba who went on to a very convincing victory over Germany. The Cuban Epee coach must be a very happy man as the Ladies' Epee final was also an all-Cuban affair. It is interesting to note that the two Ladies' Epee finalists or the Men’s Epee team were seeded very highly as the Cubans do not participate in many international events
