Chairman's report

IASI NEWS

VOL. 5 No. 3 WINTER 2000-07

Into the New Year, and as many of us are looking forward to stretching our legs on 'the real thing' as we sneak away to get a bit of snow time, IASI looks back on a successful autumn. An impressive number of us took advantage of the opportunity offered by our training weekend in October to do one of four things:

1. With myself - to sample the potential career of ski instructor on a 'suck it and see' day

2. With Shona Tate - to get involved in their first three day Instructor Training Course, learning the tools of the trade and improving personal skiing at the same time,

3. With our director of training, Derek Tate, submitting to the Level 1 qualification assessment, and achieving it, as in this case all the candidates did!
Congratulations to all - it is a tribute to the high standard of this group of skiers, to their efforts in attaining the level, and to their trainers who have helped hone their teaching and demonstrating skills.

4. With top British race coach, and high profile Eurosport commentator, John Clarke - we had a group take part in our first Race Performance Coach module.

As a commentator for Eurosport, John remembers to give regular mention to the Irish Eurosport viewers. For those who are not yet Eurosport fans, the channel covers the whole Alpine Skiing World Cup series and is even starting to cover Europa Cup, and World Cup training days, so the coverage is very comprehensive. John gives great technique tips as part of his commentary - well worth tuning in.

This productive weekend took us another step closer to one of our main goals, that being to broaden and improve all our qualifications. And we've just got word back from the Italian Alps recording a successful snow course, which is decidedly a further step in the right direction (see the report below).

Don't forget, that to move forward we need to decide where we want to go, and then together work out a strategy for getting there. This is your Association - attend courses, give feedback, tell us where you want to go in your skiing, tell us how the Association could help you and how you could help it.

Good skiing in 2001.
