BRITISH SKI CLUB FOR THE DISABLED
On Sunday 22 October the British Ski
Club for the Disabled (BSCD) visited Kilternan (organised
by Clodagh and Andrew - who else!). They brought with
them their full range of gear to assist skiers with
physical disability - ranging from the simplest of
arrangements such as skis joined in a snowplough, to
assist skiers with limited leg mobility, to sit-skis for
paraplegics. Some of the most refined skis are very
stearable and are used in racing - with some very
impressive performances! The day was arranged to allow
people with disabilities to try out skiing. There were
three busses from the Wheelchair Association and a
considerable queue of expectant skiers. A good turn-out
of instructors ensured that the day was a success, and
that everyone got a good go at the skis. It was a hard
but rewarding day - pushing sit-skis up the slope is no
doddle - not after the tenth time anyway! But the obvious
enjoyment of the participants gave me a great buzz! Ed. |

travelling at a very respectable speed - Brian's role
being to assist in control, but to allow/encourage the
maximum possible involvement of the skier |
